Read Out Loud - is there a "pause" character?

  1. Default Read Out Loud - is there a "pause" character?

Is there a character that Acrobat's and Reader's Read Out Loud feature would not pronounce out loud but rather would interpret as a brief pause?

Commas, periods, etc. have a bit of the intended effect -- but the resulting pauses are <very> brief -- and adding more commas, periods, etc. does not increase the length of the pause.

One might wish to insert somewhat longer pauses after, for instance, headings in a document.

    Thanks.

    Non-breaking space might work.

    Hi Leonard,

Thanks for the suggestion. I experimented with what WordPerfect calls a HardSpace (is that the same as a non-breaking space?) and with other characters, separately and in combination.

So far, the most effective "pause character" that I have discovered is the combination of a HardSpace followed by two unspaced periods. The Read Out Loud feature does not pronounce the HSpace.. combination -- <unless> it immediately follows some other "pause character" like a period, comma, etc., in which case HSpace.. is pronounced "point."

The pause effect given by Read Out Loud to HSpace.. seems to be about twice the length of the pause given to a period, comma, etc.
