Simon, can you please tell me which Review feature of Acrobat you are using? Shared Review is not available in Reader 7, so I'm guessing you're using "Send by email for review". Does this sound right?
Thanks!
Pat

I wanted to mention another problem that the reviewers with Reader 9 noticed. Our files contain navigation bookmarks, tables of contents, figures, etc., as well as cross-references to other sections within the same document. When the mouse passes over these links, rather than turning into the hand cursor, a "floatover" box appears, displaying coordinates of some sort. If the cursor moves, the coordinates in the floatover change. When clicked, these links do not jump to their destination.
As our documents are also confidential, I tried creating a simple non-confidential document that I could send or upload for ****ysis. However, all three reviewers with Reader 9 were able to annotate it. Perhaps it has something to do with the complexity of the document itself.
One of the reviewers uninstalled Reader 9 and reinstalled Reader 8 and all of the problems I've described are gone. The other reviewers immediately adopted this solution as most expedient, and now everyone is back to commenting as usual.

Thanks for the posts. You can send the test files to vikask#adobe.com (replace # with @, forum rules)
Please ensure the following (sorry for sounding repetitive but its just to avoid any confusion) -
1. The review has been initiated using Acrobat 8.
2. Its a shared review file and not an email/browser review i.e. it has been intiated using the "Send for shared review" sub-menu present under the "Comments" menu.
Thanks again for all the help.

Hi Penn,
From the email and bug file that you sent to Vikas, seem like there is the problem connecting to the shared review server 10.138.184.83. After clicking Connect, it does not prompt to login and does not get the work offline. Therefore, users CAN make comments, however, CANNOT publish comments.
Please provide additional info to help us trouble-shoot:
- Does server 10.138.184.83 require authentication?
- Can she connect to the that server from her system? If yes, does it prompt to login?
- What type of comment repository that she used when creating this shared review file? (Shared network folder, WebDAV or SharePoint)
BTW, the work around is:
- Select Document > Comments > Work offline
- Click Send Comments button to send it back via email.
Thanks,
Jennifer Vu
Hi Jennifer,
- Yes, the 10.138.184.83 server does require authentication
- The reviewer can connect to that server from her system and is prompted to log in when she uses Adobe Reader 8, but not when she uses Adobe Reader 9.
- The comment repository we are using is a shared network folder.
The workaround to send comments would work, but the best workaround for us was simply to have the reviewer revert to version 8 of Adobe Reader.
Thanks.
Thank you, Penn, for your quick respond. Those are useful info for us to narrow down the real issue. I suspect that it might be the cross-platform issues. Could you please let us know:
- Which OS (Mac or Win) and version that this network folder shared review created from?
- Which OS that reviewers used and had problem connecting to the server?
- How did the initiator setup comment repository? (Type in the UNC path or select a pre-mounted shared folder)
Regards,
Jennifer
Both the review initiator and the reviewer were using the Windows XP OS. I believe that the initiator selected the shared folder by browsing among his shared network drives.
Thanks.
This is a reply to Martha Cepek problem "Acrobat Pro 8 shared review not annotable in Reader 9".
After investigating the problem, we found out that it was because of special type of PDF/A that does not allow commenting by default.
To enable commenting for this type of file in Reader 9
-Select Edit > Preferences > Documents
-Change ‘View Documents in PDF/A mode to ‘Never’
-Commenting Toolbar will be enabled.
Please let me know if it works for you.
Thanks,
Jennifer Vu
Thanks, Penn, for the info on OS type. I will pass it on to Vikas.
Jennifer
I have been using Adobe Reader 8 for quite some time. All of a sudden my Toolbars have stopped appearing on opening a file. Earlier on the toolbars would open by themselves. Now I have to use F8 button to open any toolbars.
That sounds very funny. I do not see any information regarding this.
Can somebody help me with that?
Cheers!
