Check the page. In short: the product most likely never got properly installed, either due to insufficient user privileges on system directories (such as the one for fonts) or another Adobe product interfering. Therefore uninstall all Adobe products you may have on the system, including Acrobat Reader or Adobe Media Player, run the CS3 clean scripts and try again. Make sure to run as administrator while you do your uninstall/ install.

If you have a wound, do you blame the band-aid?

If your system is messed up, do you blame the software you are trying to install on top of the system?

OS installations are like cars; sometimes it's more expensive to continue repairing them, and it's faster, better and cheaper to get a new one (re-install the OS from scratch.)

However, if you insist on trying to patch everything instead of reinstalling, you are entitled to free support from Adobe for these kinds of installation and "getting started" issues. Contact Adobe via phone, find a local phone number at <http://adobe.com/support/>

These kinds of issues are very complicated to solve via a web forum, so call Adobe directly to get help.

Todd is absolutely correct. The most practical way to deal with this issue is to erase your hard drive and start with a clean slate. If you continue to have no success, make use of the money you've spent and call Adobe Support.

Jan, please do understand that we are merely users just like you (well, with a more insights into the Adobe mind, perhaps) and cannot be held responsible for whether products work for you or not. The cause of your issues is pretty clear now - the UI graphics system does not initialize, which in turn must mean you are attempting to run the stuff in an "unqualified" environment. What graphics card do you have? A notebook perhaps? Screen resolution? Also, since you are running on Vista Ultimate or Business, what are your settings for visual effects?

That's what I thought and dreaded doing but I guess I have no choice, it's the 12 hours that I can;t afford to build back everything as this is a working computer that pays the bills. Do you have any idea hopw many programs I have to re-install? this is no doubt a pain and I might as well buy another computer, this happens every time I upgrade with adobe, it seems like adobe does this on purpose to annoy the hell out of us paying users. I am mad, really mad that adobe is once again going to cost me hours or a new computers. I wish there was a choice out there I would switch in a minute. Adobe is an unhealthy monopoly that is more interested in your money than writing programs that work. Sure it's easy for you to sit there and say re-install but what about my time? are you going to give it back to me? What about my Microsoft suite, Accounting suite, plugins, QuarkXpress, Codecs, you name it. It's easy for you to say "re-install" but some of us have mortgages to pay, children to support and food to put on my table. I have NEVER EVER EVER had a problem solve in any of the Adobe Forums and this once again for the third time in a row been the case with their software. Thanks for your response but I'll dig into my account and buy a new computer

Jan, you may not get much success from the Forum because you've failed to offer any of the information required to help solve your problem. What kind of hardware do you have? CPU, RAM, display card? What OS do you use? What additional plugins, codecs? What Adobe bundle are you installing? Does your machine meet the required specifications of the software? Have you spoken to Adobe Customer Support as advised?

I've installed the CS4 Master Collection on two machines so far without any problems whatsoever, and there have been very few CS4 installation complaints on this Forum to date, which suggests that the problem lies with your system, rather than the software. Unless you are prepared to provide information that allows us to diagnose your problem, you're very unlikely to get any practical assistance.

Trust me, Jan, I've installed CS4 products more often than you and you're blaming the wrong people when you go on about the forums being useless. Now apparently the AE engineers prefer to stay quiet in their bunker and hope that Todd will hold the fort, but go over to the Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat, Dreamweaver, Encore and InDesign forums and you will see, that even the people developing this in your opinion intentioanlly spoiled software are trying to help. As for Adobe's alleged "monopoly" - these discussions are at best tiresome and have very little substance. There are enough alternatives out there, including free ones and nobody is forcing you to use their products. Are they big? Yes, nobody is denying that. Does it get in the way of doing "good" software - yes, of course, that too, sometimes. Still, we all have our reasons to use their products as we have reasons to use Microsoft, SAP and other products, regardless how many bugs those may have... It's all a matter of perspective and how much you are willing to do to work your way around bugs and limitations to be able to use those products. Yes, buying a new computer is always the worst alternative, but all things considered, you probably wouldn't expect Office 2007 to run on a 10 year old notebook, would you...?

You may want to start trouble-shooting your installation here: <http://generalspecialist.com/2007/02/troubleshooting-after-effects-7.asp>

I'd start by removing all non-OS-installed fonts and third-party codecs (DivX, XviD and all other stuff related to non-legal video watching).
