Color Navigator or Eye Match 3?
I was surprised to hear from Eizo that they strongly recommend NOT using Eye Match 3 or any other 3rd party calibration software to calibrate the Color Edge CG21. Instead they advise to use the Eye One Display 2 Colorimeter with their own software, Color Navigator. They hold that the Gretag software only manipulates the graphic card whereas their own software really works on the monitor (software calibration vs. hardware calibration).
I never heard about that, didn't read about it eather. Before turning everything upside down I'd like to hear what you pros in the forum think about it. Is this recommendable? For me it would mean that I'd calibrate 3 Eizo CG21s with the native software, a 4th LaCie Deep Blue with Eye One Match 3. Granted that using the Eizo Color Navigator would really be the better choice, wouldn't the use of 2 different calibration software in one company/workflow cause just new troubles?
Why are those Eizo guys so derogative regarding other calibration softwares than their own, and noone else is?
Sharing your experience is highly appreciated!!

Re: Color Navigator or Eye Match 3?
Johann,
Eizo seems to follow this concept:
1. the monitor is pre-calibrated in the factory.
2. internal LUTs have high resolution, 12 bit.
3. the target contains very few samples.
4. the necessary changes for gamma, white point
and luminance are widely calculated open-loop,
based on pre-calibration and the few samples.
The result is pretty good but not perfect, in my
tests for CG19.
Alternatively I had adjusted another monitor CG19
manually very near to D65, gamma=2.2 and 6500K.
This was done according to test patterns.
Then the monitor was calibrated and characterized
by GMB Eye-One pro and ProfileMaker, using graphics
card LUTs and the LCD target with about 100 patches.
After some trials, only small deviations of the
straight line appeared in the LUTs and judging by
test patterns the quality was better.
Nevertheless I would recommend the first workflow
because of speed and simplicity (for WinXP).
The higher resolution of the internal LUTs is
probably required to calibrate a monitor whose
manual settings are far from the intended state.

Re: Color Navigator or Eye Match 3?
Gernot,
thanks for the information.
Is the workflow on MacOSX as fast and simple as on WinXP? And would you think I run into trouble using GMB software for my CRT and Color Navigator for the Eizo? (trouble = colors would match less than before)
Can you explain, how you adjust your monitor manually befor calibrating?
Regards

Re: Color Navigator or Eye Match 3?
Johann,
sorry, I don't have Macs. And in the moment
I don't have the time to read the informations
again which came with the monitors.
The monitor is adjusted using these test patterns:
<http://www.fho-emden.de/~hoffmann/caltutor270900.pdf>
In any case of doubt about Acrobat's color
management it's recommended to use the HTML version
instead.
<http://www.fho-emden.de/~hoffmann/caltutor.html>
This test is valid - whatever calibration method
was used.
The adjustment of black point, of three gamma
values and of gray gamma is straightforward.
Color temperature and absolute luminance can be
adjusted only by several trials, always comparing
the LUT curves after calibration by an instrument:
finished if these curves are almost straight lines
from 0,0 to 1,1.
[ I don't cherish or propagate this method.
It's a test, and as well necessary for an older
Win98 system, because Eizo ColorNavigator doesn't
work under Win98.
A useful test: I'm somewhat surprised that Navigator
can calibrate with very few samples or patches.
Practically, the quality is sufficient, but IMO not
really perfect.]
No problem: use GMB calibration for the CRTs and
Navigator for Eizo TFTs.
