Can I remove change bars from graphics?

  1. Default Can I remove change bars from graphics?

I am using Windows XP SP2 and FM 7.0p579.

I usually author in FM with the "change bar" feature enabled, so that all changes to the content are marked with a black change bar 1/2" to the left of any changed content.

This means when I create graphics that contain text boxes, FM inserts change bars 1/2" to the left of every new or changed textbox in the graphic. (FM doesn't put a change bar to the left of imported GIF images or images/lines you create with the Tools Palette.)

Is there any way to remove the change bars from just the graphic, but retain the change bars everywhere else in the document?

I have checked the online help, and tried selecting the entire graphic then: Format > Style > Change bar. Although that approach does indeed remove the change bar left of headings and paragraphs, it doesn't remove the change bar in the graphic. I have also tried blocking the text in the textbox, and then: Format > Style > Change bar. It doesn't remove the change bar. If you select the text box, Format > "Style" is grayed out.

(I know I can print out a hard copy of the document, remove all change bars from the document, then go back in and insert the change bars manually by checking the hard copy--but I want an easier way.)

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I just did a quick test on this and managed to get rid of a change bar beside a text box inside an anchored frame. I selected all the text in the text box, opened the character designer (Ctrl-D), and cleared the Change Bar checkbox.

Here's another trick, that works in places where change bars get "stuck":

    1. Place the cursor in the paragraph (in the text box).
    2. Open the Paragraph Designer (not the Char. Designer).
    3. On the Default Font tab, first set the Change Bar property.
(make sure it's set, not "grayed-out" set)
    4. Apply.
    5. Clear the Change Bar property.
    6. Apply.

Note that check boxes have *three* states: set, cleared and "as is".
Make sure you click to get the correct state.
And yes, you do need to follow step 3 and 4 before step 5 and 6.

“FM doesn't put a change bar to the left of imported GIF images…”

Actually, it does, it’s just that you need to make sure you select a para tag above and below the graphic, click-and-drag to select both, then apply a change bar.

Thanks for the help everyone (I was off Friday, so could not respond until today).

I have tried Rebecca's approach above, and it works about 50% of the time. The other 50% of the time, when I click the "Apply" button on the Character Designer dialog box, the change bar shortens by about 10%, but it doesn't go away. I have no idea why it works sometimes and doesn't work other times. (Also, when the text box is 2 rows long, the change bar goes away from the top row, but stays to the left of the bottom row of text.)

I tried Thomas' approach, and when I click Change Bar option on the Default Font tab, and then click the "Apply" button on the Paragraph Designer dialog box, a "New Format" dialog box appears and says, "Create a new paragraph format using the properties in the Paragraph Designer." The word "Body" appears in the Tag window. I can either click the Create button or the Cancel button. I don't think I want to edit the existing "Body" paragraph style, do I?

Thanks for everyone's help! I appreciate it! (^.^)

No, probably not. If I understand the situation, you more likely want to first replace all instances of the Body paragraph style with your default paragraph body style.

    Cheers & hope this helps,

Hmmm. Sounds to me like your end-of-flow markers think they include a change bar and really don't want to change their minds. So if something still has a change bar after you've used the character designer to turn off change bars, you could try going to the end of its paragraph and pressing the Enter key. Then use the Backspace key to get rid of the extra blank line. That (in effect) adds a new end-of-flow marker, which hopefully uses the default layout.

    Cheers, Rebecca

I want to thank everyone who provided ideas for my question. I tried everything that everyone suggested to the best of my ability, and I still cannot remove the change bars to the left of text boxes in graphics. However, I appreciate the time and creativity on everyone's part! Thanks again!

Tim, I'd be glad to take a look at the graphics-related issue. If interested, let's take this offline -- ssend an email to monica-publishing-consultants.com and we can then use the Remote Assistance tool (or whatever is your preference). -Monica

Hello everyone, this is the process I ended up with that seems to work (I think some earlier posts tried to explain this process):

    1. Open the Format > Character > Designer dialog box, the Format > Paragraph > Designer dialog box, and the Edit > Find/Change dialog box.

You have to open both the Character Designer and Paragraph Designer because FM can create and assign the change bar at either the character level or the paragraph level. Steps 2 - 7 attempt to remove the change bar at the character level first. If that doesn’t work, steps 8 - 12 attempt to remove it at the paragraph level.

Removing the Change Bar as a Character Element

    2. Place the cursor in a new text box (that has a change bar).

    3. Set the Find/Change dialog box to Character Format, and click Find.

    4. If this is the first time you have used the Character Format search, a Find Character Format dialog box appears. FrameMaker is asking you what character format you want it to find. Use Shft+F8 to set all values to “As Is.” Clear all checkboxes except the Change Bar checkbox, and click Set.

    5. On the Find/Change dialog box, you might have to click Find again. FM highlights the first text [“character(s)”] it finds that has a checkbox element attached to it.

    6. On the Character Designer dialog box, check the Change Bar check box if it is not already checked, click Apply.

    7. Uncheck the Change Bar checkbox, and click Apply again.

Did it remove the change bar? Hopefully it did. If it did not, then FM has assigned the change bar at the paragraph level.

Removing the Change Bar as a Paragraph Element

    8. Place the cursor in a new text box (that has a change bar).

    9. Set the Find/Change dialog box to Paragraph Tag, and type “body” (without the quotes) in the Find text box to the right.

    10. Click Find. FM should highlight the text in the text box.

    11. On the Paragraph Designer dialog box, on the Default Font tab, check the Change Bar check box if it is not already checked, and click Apply.

    12. Uncheck the Change Bar checkbox, and click Apply again.

The change bar should be gone. Good luck!
