So is the "PDF file ... intact and usable?"
And since it is a .pdf error, what version Acrobat are you running? A stand-alone or the limited version that came with FM 7.2?

Summary:
Selected File->SaveAsPDF. The PDF file is built but then an error pops up indicating the following:
Save as PDF failed to post-process the PDF file for Reflow: errors were encountered in the PDF file.
The PDF file should be intact and usable but may not reflow properly. Check that the destination PDF file is not in use or its permissions, then Save as PDF again. If the problem persists, please contact Adobe Technical Support.
Steps to reproduce:
Have a book of framemaker files. The book has 1400 pages.
Selected File->SaveAsPDF.
Wait for pdf to build.
Then error above pops up.
Product version: Adobe FrameMaker 7.2
Product: FrameMaker
Version: 7.2b144
Platform information: Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Hardware: Dell
OS Version: Version 2002 Service Pack 2
RAM: 2 GB

The PDF is intact and usable. I am not sure what the reflow means. I was reading on the web that is was something to do with using the pdf on different software/hardware so I am unable to check that the "reflow" of the pdf works.
The error pops up as follows
I choose File->SaveAsPDF from the framemaker software.
The distiller automatically will pop up and run through the processing.
When it is done, There is a Adobe Framemaker PopUp window that comes up showing this error.
I don't know how that would be related to the Acrobat version since I did not attempt to open the pdf before this error pops up.
Here is the version anyways: Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 Version 7.0.8.
I don't remember how I got that version, either it was the one with the disk or some other software i loaded on my computer or just a download from the website?
The Reader version doesn't have any impact; you're correct.
However, FM ships with version 7 of Acrobat Distiller, but it's a bundled version with limited functionality. That's the software that creates the .pdf from FM -- it isn't happening in FM itself.
If you had a different version, or the entire Acrobat program installed, that could/would make an impact.
Does the book use more than one text flow, by any chance?
Art
I don't have the Adobe Acrobat full installation.
I installed FrameMaker 7.2 and installed the Distiller 7.0 from the same FrameMaker disk when the installation asked me to do so. The distiller that was on the disk was Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Distiller Professional Version 7.0.0 3/3/2005.
I am not sure how to check the text flow?
The document I am creating is made up of several .FM files all added to a book. The .FM files are all made from the same template created when we started this document. Each template is then revised by different developers within the company. They have been told to keep the standard template and to not modify paragraph formats, etc.. created in the template.
Therefore I am not sure about a text flow? Is there some automated way I can verify the text flow?
Lisa,
There are a couple settings the FM and Acrobat support that are more often used in newsletter publishing than tech pubs that allow articles to be separated and written into a .pdf by article/flow.
It would be really unusual to use it in the enviornment you describe, but it is the only thing that springs to mind when I read over your error message.
If everything is in the .pdf and it's functioning, I think I'd ignore the warning and go on with life. I don't think you'll have any problems.

I would suggest that Lisa should be updating her FM to version to 7.2P158? Question was there a "7.2b" version or is that a typo?
Lisa--You may want to try generating your PDF from the book by doing one at a time (This is an option in the "PDF Setup for selected Files dialog box), and see which one is generating the message. Also you can then check to see if the PDF's generated are OK.
1. I upgraded to FM version 7.2P158 but still get the same error.
2. I also tried generating each .FM file as a pdf file and each file builds correctly as a PDF, no errors are reported.
3. I am wondering if FM just can't handle the size of the pdf I am building. Is there a max limit?
To better say again where the failure occurs:
Selected File->SaveAsPDF.
Distiller Windows pops up and starts processing the pdf.
The distiller Progress Status bar indicates 100% complete
BUT
The Status indicates: "Relocating Files".
This "Relocating Files" status remains on the Distiller for a quite a long time, I'd approximate 10 minutes long.
When the Status finally indicates "Ready".
This is when I see a FrameMaker Console Window Pop Up indicating:
"Save as PDF failed to post-process the PDF file for Reflow...."
Maybe the FM/Distiller isn't able to relocate the files. I monitored the directory the pdf was being built in and saw a .tps file that was built in the process of the pdf being built. This .tps file got to a size of 71,677 Kb and the .tpdf file was of size 14,715 Kb. The distiller did remove the .tpdf and .tps file after it was complete.
The resultant .pdf file created is 17,994 Kb.
My boss would really like to know why FM is printing this error. This is a working document that we expect to double in size over the next few months. If FM can't handle this we really need to know as soon as possible. Our jobs depend on good documentation and this is the document we release at the completion of our project. It cannot have any defects. I just need to be able to tell him why this error is generated.
Are responders to these forums workers of Adobe?
Can someone tell me what the max size capability is of FM to make a pdf? There must be some maximum size.
Hi, Lisa:
Perhaps I missed this in the thread; if so, apologies.
I did notice your mention of the long time it takes to relocate the output files. Perhaps this indicates that you're working on a network? If so, the message may be due to "latency," that is, the delay in finishing the work files or final files. If FrameMaker or Distiller looks for the files at the network location before they're complete, the reflow processing could fail, hence the message.
If you are on a network, have you tried to perform the whole process on a local computer?
Related issues that might affect the operation on a local computer (or on a network) could include:
* a heavily-fragmented and/or nearly full hard drive
* a slow hard drive
* insufficient RAM
* other applications running
* Windows swap file and possibly also the hardware acceleration settings (I don't have any specific suggestions for these)
Finally, I've never seen this reflow message. I don't know if reflow processing is a normal action that takes place in the standard processing of FrameMaker-to-PDF. Is it possible that there's a customized operation that's being invoked by a customized psprolog or epilog file, or customized PostScript or PDFMark code embedded in the file(s)?
HTH

Questions:
1. Have you done a help search post-processing or Reflow errors in distiller? The post-processing may be due defualt setting or setting you configured.
2. are the graphics embedded or referenced. Embedded will make the files extremely large
3. Are files on network or local system. Have been working over network for 12 years without problems. If over a network, all you can do is check disk space available, there is no way for you to defrag and changing your swap file will not make any difference. As for RAM if you can open 1400 page document, I assume you have no ram issues. 4. I would agree with Peter, make sure you have no other programs open
Although any time someone suggests creating a PS file and distill it people jump on this as wrong, you might want to try this as a way to see if you still have a problem and what messages exist:
1. from the book, open File>print book
a. Check Print to file
b. set printer as Adobe PDF or if you have a postscript printer setup use it.
c. make sure the file being saved end in ps.
d. Click print
2. Locate the PS file you generated and either double-click on the *.ps file or open from distiller and build the PDF. Pay attention to any messages that appear as the PDF is building and the page number. If Distiller has been set up, you will get a log, check it out. Did you get a working PDF or what messages did you get?
Have you check on the log that should be generated to see what is happening
