Inserting a Variable in a Table Title

  1. Default Inserting a Variable in a Table Title

    Fellow Forum Members,
Can anyone out there let me know if it's possible to insert a variable inside the table title autonumber field? My objective is to have the "(Continued)" variable automatically included together with the rest of the table title which is T:Table <$chapnum>-<n+>: . So essentially I need it to look something like this: <$chapnum>-<n+>: <(Continued)>. Anytime the table splits to the next page, the "(Continued)" variable will automatically kick in together with the automated title. I can't figure out how to set this up. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I don't believe you can; I don't think that particular variable can be included in an auto string (because it isn't a numbering variable). Probably the best you can do is continue to insert it manually...

I must be misunderstanding the question.

When a table spans across two or more pages, FrameMaker automatically places a duplicate of that table's heading row, including its formatting, at the top of the spanned table.

When a heading row contains a paragraph style that in turn contains autonumbering, the autonumbering appears in the continued table's heading.

Finally, if the table heading also contains the FrameMaker system variable Table Continuation, the FrameMaker adds the value of Table Continuation to the continued table's headings.

All of this works, however, only when the table has one or more "real" heading rows rather than a standard row that's disguised with formatting to look like a heading.

So what doesn't work if, in a given table heading, you simply append the Table Continuation variable to your autonumbered table heading paragraph style?

    Cheers & hope this helps,
    Riley

    Gentlemen,
Thanks for the posts. I'll explain it a different way. I have a 300 page document that has a lot of tables. Sometimes the table span to the next page and sometimes it stays within a single page. For the times it continues on to the other page the header row automatically duplicate itself like it's suppose to on the top of the next page. The header row is not the problem. The problem exists in the the Table Title that is right above the Header Row. When the Table Title duplicates itself in the next page it would be great if the variable value "(Continued)" would automatically kick in. Currently I have to scan the 300 page document and manually insert the "(Continued)" variable where ever I see a table split (this is a lot of manual work). It would be great if there was some way of combining the variable "(Continued)", together with the Table Title autonumbering, T:Table <$chapnum>-<n+>: so that everytime I insert a table this is taken care of automatically and then if the table splits the variable (Continued) automatically appears. Art says it can't be done. Therefore, I hope the programmers at FrameMaker can incorporate this capability in a future realease. Again, thanks to all for your responses.

    Might the following work?

    * Create a second, borderless heading row above the normal table heading row.

    * Type a given table's title in that borderless table row. Apply table title formatting and autonumbering as required.

    * Append the Table Continuation variable to the table title contained in the borderless row.

The visual effect becomes that of a free-floating table title that also uses the table continuation variable...(?)

    Cheers & hope this helps,

    Binar,

It probably doesn't help you much, but remember that there is no harm in inserting the table continuation variable in a table that doesn't extend to multiple pages. Thus, you can develop the habit of always inserting the variable at the end of every table title. Still a manual process, however.

In structured FrameMaker, I frequently require the table continuation variable at the end of a table title. FrameMaker still doesn't insert it automatically, but at least it warns the user who forgets it.
