Change Bars won't stay gone

  1. Default Change Bars won't stay gone

I ran a comparison of 2 documents. After reviewing the changes listed in both the summary and detailed docs, I closed them without saving.

Then, when I returned to one of the docs I used in the comparison, I saw that there were change bars alongside some of the tables. In addition, I was unable to make font changes to the table... all the text in the tables with change bars is red... NOT the color of choice here.

I went to Format>Document>Change Bars and cleared them... The change bars disappeared, but as soon as I would attempt to make a change one of the tables (the changes were unsuccessful btw), the change bars returned!

I have saved the doc as a MIF, then reopened/saved as an fm.. but this hasn't helped.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

Could a change bar setting at the book level be in effect?

    Hi Art...

I'd say that's a good guess.. but these are both BRAND new files that are not in a book and haven't been taken from an existing book... :-/

    very strange isn't it?

    Hey Kelley,

Did you create the tables in FM from scratch? Or did they come in from Word or Excel or another program? If imported, they may have some junk characters embedded that are semi-corrupting the files, although I would have expected the MIF washing to have cleared them.

Might try (on a copy) converting the tables to paragraphs, running the MIF wash cycle again, and then converting the paras back to tables...

    OK.. i tried it...

    here's what i did...

copied a table into a new doc
    converted the table to text
    "cleared all change bars"
saved it as a mif (at that point the change bars REAPPEARED)
    "cleared all change bars" again
saved as fm (change bars stayed gone)
    converted text back to table...

change bars REAPPEARED... and i am still unable to change the the font in anyway... It will take PP changes but nothing to update the font.. it just stays red.. and in times roman (can't change to Arial to match the established format)

    don't get it!

    No, it's wierd.

    Still curious though:

They were imported from Word.. which is why i did what you suggested...

what i'm having to do now is copy them from the original Word doc, then "paste special" as TEXT... then convert them from text to table in Frame... bleah.. there's a TON of these friggin' things...

OH.. and i realized that it didn't have anything to do with the doc comparison i did.. I made a new doc and reimported the Word doc.. and the change bars showed up! and so did all the ugly red text in the tables... and no, i can't find anywhere that Track changes is on in the Word doc itself...

so i found a "workaround".. but it would have been nice to solve this.. seems like the last few problems I have had with either Frame or Robohelp have been unsolvable! :-(

    Thanks for trying tho!

FrameMaker doesn't work with RoboHelp. Perhaps there's something else these issues have in common, such as Microsoft Word?

Have you tried accepting all the changes in Word before performing your copy/paste/import?

    Cheers.

Maybe try painting the tables in Word with "Remove Formatting," save the file as .rtf, and try opening that in FM (you may have better luck using the Japanese .rtf filter than the normal one).

If that works, you could cut and paste them....

But I think you're on the right track; something in Word is triggering the weird change bar behavior.

    Thanks Art...

i'm in sort of a time crunch... so i'm going to stick with the workaround i have now... instead of trying the repaint technique.. might try that if i get some down time to "play"

    Thanks!
