Hi, all, I met a problem concerning broken link in the toc file of Adobe FrameMaker 7.2. The first part of the entry is linkable, which is the chapter title, but the tab leader and the page number is not. Could anyone give me a hint? Thanks a lot! SOS!

I believe that's the way it's supposed to work... The link itself is a cross ref to the tag. The leading dots and page number are system-generated. Art

I disagree. In my TOCs, the entire line, chapter title, leader dots, and page number, is clickable. But I am using structured Frame, but I doubt that it is different from unstructured when creating TOCs. Van

Alice (?), In FM, a link in the TOC starts at the beginning of the line and ends as soon as a change in character formatting is encountered. That's the way this type of hypertext links work in FM. So, the reason your link stops after the chapter title is that the rest of the line uses a different character formatting, e.g. font, font size, font style. You will probably find the reason for this on the TOC Reference Page of the TOC file, which is where the formatting of all TOC entries are defined. Let us know if you need further help. -- /Thomas Michanek

Hi, Thomas, You really got the point. I thought I got the answer from your reply, but there was a question that the character format of the part before the tab leaders and page number is superscript. However, I don’t want my tab leaders and page number to apply the Superscript style. How can I solve the problem by retaining the link the make the tab leaders and page number not superscripted? Thanks, Alice

| In the TOC specification on the reference page, add </> (default pgf font) after <$paratext> , eg: <$paratext></>\t<$pagenum> for all entries This way, if a paragraph picked by the TOC has a character format at the end, it will not affect the following items (leading dots, page number). | It only solves the problem of superscript, but the link is still broken. |

> It only solves the problem of superscript, but the link is still broken. Unfortunately, this is how links in the TOC work in FM. If you really need your entry to contain character formatting like superscript, then the link will be "broken" at that point. The link ends as soon as a change in the formatting happens. -- /Thomas Michanek

Oh, how frustrating! I met a lot of problems with regard to the Toc and had to re-touch the toc after updating the book. A new problem occurred yesterday. The correct toc entry should read: Heading + tab leaders + chapter number-page number. However, after re-generating the book, it became “Heading + page number“. “Beyond the basic....................2-1“ > “Beyond the basic 1“ Does anyone know the reason? Thanks!

I think you should read the help or manual about setting up a TOC. FM picks its formatting information for a TOC from the Reference Page called "TOC", within the book's TOC file. There you'll find one entry for each tag to include in the TOC. For a "Chapter" tag, you'll find an entry in the TOC Ref. page with the tag "ChapterTOC". The contents of that entry control how the generated TOC entry will look. You may say that the Ref. page is a "template" for the generated TOC list. Once you've found the correct entry, you can change it by adding a tab with a tab leader, "<$chapnum>", "<$pagenum>" etc. -- /Thomas Michanek
