Text insets causing seeming unresolvableunresolved cross-references

This is a discussion on Text insets causing seeming unresolvableunresolved cross-references within the Adobe Framemaker forums in Adobe Tools category; I'm using unstructured FrameMaker version 8.0p277. I've got several different text insets that include bullets. (The bullet is the last paragraph in the text inset.) Repeatedly, I get unresolved cross references errors. But for only one of the text insets. I "resolve" the errors. But then, the next time that I generate my TOC, the error returns. I tried adding a small (as in 1 point) paragraph with an en space (Esc space 1) after the text inset. (I read that on this form somewhere.) But I still get the errors. How do I resolve this problem?...

Default Re: Text insets causing seeming unresolvableunresolved cross-references

Trudy,

I do not work in unstructured Frame, so not quite sure this is correct; however, a similar problem exists in structured Frame.

When you create a cross-reference, Frame looks for a "marker" at the target site to which to link. If one is there, it records its ID in the cross-reference. If there is none, it creates one, in which case the file has to be saved in order to retain the marker.

When you create a cross-reference to some place in a text inset, the text inset is NOT open; therefore, even though Frame appears to create the cross-reference, no marker is created in the target text inset because the file is not open. The next time you open the file, the cross-reference is unresolved because there is no marker in the text inset.

The solution is to OPEN the text inset file and create a cross-reference to each place you intend or think you might link to. This forces Frame to create the markers. Then save the text inset file. You can delete the cross-references you just created; this does not cause the markers to be deleted. They remain in the text inset file, even though there is no cross-references to them.

Now go back to the document which contains the unresolved cross-references and resolve them. Save the file. Because there are real markers in the text inset file, your cross-references have IDs to reference. The next time you open the file, the references should be OK.
