Autonumbering Figures in FrameMaker 7.2

This is a discussion on Autonumbering Figures in FrameMaker 7.2 within the Adobe Framemaker forums in Adobe Tools category; I need to number the figures in a book consecutively through the chapters. Default Autonumbering Figures in FrameMaker 7.2

I need to number the figures in a book consecutively through the chapters. I use the following autonumber format in all chapters:

F:Figure <n+>:

However, the first figure in each chapter starts with a rather arbitrary number. This is how it looks in the first few chapters.

- Figure 1: to Figure 6: (OK)
- Figure 7: (OK)
- Figure 7: to Figure Figure 40: (should be Figure 8: to Figure 41
- Figure 12: to Figure 18: (should be Figure 42: to Figure 48
- Figure 19: to Figure 20: (should be Figure 49: to Figure 50
- etc.

The chapters are themselves not numbered, they have only titles.

Happy for any help!

Gunnar

Hello fellow Swede (?),

I'm not sure how familiar you are with FM, so let's start
with the basics:
Have you updated the book? Numbering between files doesn't
change unless you update the book. (Common misconception)

Then, have you set up the numbering in the book file correctly?
In the book file window, you need to select on or more files,
and then check the Numbering properties. In that dialog, check
that the Paragraph numbering is set to continue from last file
(for the files that are intended to work like that), or to
restart from 1 (for the first chapter for instance).
NOTE: do not check or change the numbering properties from
within an individual file. The book settings will override any
settings in the individual files.

If you change the numbering properties, don't forget to
update the book again... (see above)

If this doesn't correct the problem, you may have other
paragraphs beside the figure numbering tag that incorrectly
use the "F:" autonumbering series. You may think that you
don't have any, but an empty paragraph may have an override
that uses "F:". Such a paragraph would exist between the
last correctly numbered figured in one file and the first
incorrectly numbered figure in the next file.

Hej Thomas!

Thanks, my simple(!) problem is solved. I didn't understand how many times I should use update the book.

In the future I'll be careful to update the book for the slightest suspicion that it might be needed.
