Hello, I have a table in a document that repeats, so I have used the "Table Continuation" variable and it seems to work fine. The only problem I have is that it inserts an extra period. For example: [Page 1] Table 1. XYZ Operation. ---------------------- ---------------------- [Page 2] Table 1. XYZ Operation. (Continued). ---------------------- ---------------------- I would like to get rid of that extra period that comes after the word "Operation", but before the variable (Continued). In other words, the end result should look like this: [Page 1] Table 1. XYZ Operation. ---------------------- ---------------------- [Page 2] Table 1. XYZ Operation (Continued). ---------------------- ---------------------- Is there a special trick needed to make this happen? Thanks in advance for your suggestions. Regards, -J

This is not possible without a script or similar. FM simply adds the variable after the table title. No alteration of the table title can be done. -- /Thomas Michanek

Quite so - the table continuation variable (which you can change, so I've already suppressed the full-stop after Continued) is simply appended to the table title. I've never even thought of putting a full-stop at the end of a table title, so it's a problem I hadn't run into before. Think how much ink/toner you could save over the year by quietly discarding that one dot ...

James, I'm also curious about using a period after the table title, as I can't remember noticing periods after titles in any publications -- is it required by a specific style guide? My Chicago Manual of Style (12th, can't put my hands on 13th or 14th at the moment) does not use periods after titles, an in fact it eschews repeating the title, even. (ref. 12.17) In FM 7.2 the table continuation variable is a bit schizophrenic, because while the variable content is suppressed (as expected) on the first page of the table, the variable symbol's on-screen horizontal space is not. If the variable's space had been suppressed it would be possible to do Table 1. XYZ Operation//var//. and thus have the result that you would like. Very annoying...

Hello everyone, Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it. Sheila, we are using a very specific standard for our publications. It is the US Army military specification (MIL-STD-40051). Regards, Jim
