Make your text wrap from a path in the first place. It's what I generally use anyway - gives more control than entering offset values.
Place your object over your text. Draw a rectangle or some other irregular path around the object, out to where you'd like the text offse, and give it a stroke of .5 pt. to Go to Object - Text Wrap and give it an offset of zero. Now you can direct select segments and anchors, and drag them where you want, forcing the text to to move away. When you're satisfied, remove the storke - or, in Macarena's case, give it some color.
