Drop shadows create white edge.

  1. Default Drop shadows create white edge.

I have an oval shape in Illustrator & when I add a drop shadow (using either the "effects" route or the "filter" route) the anti-aliased edge is quite light & clearly visible.

This seems to happen even if I say "create separate shadow".

I suppose the oval is anti-aliasing to white rather than to transparent so the drop shadow is not showing through the edge pixels.

Is there a fix for this? (I can send the file if necessary.)

The raster settings are at 600 & the colour mode is CMYK, although I used web safe colours in the picker.

    Thanks.

Which version of Illustrator are you using?

  3. Default Re: Drop shadows create white edge.

    CS2 12.0.1 on Mac OS X 10.4.8

    Thanks

Ok. In the Drop Shadow Options dialog, which value for the blurring did you choose? More than about 16 Pt?

In other words, when you apply the Drop Shadow effect and choose Blur 8 Pt, do you then see the white edges, too? Or do they just occur when you choose Blur values higher than about 16 Pt?

The drop shadow is actually set to 1mm but that's only about 3pts.

I just tried to type in 3pts & it said invalid numeric value.

I don't know if that's because I have the prefs set to mm or what.

Mine is set to mm, too. You can type 3 pt, but not 3 pts.

However, is it right that the issue you're talking about does not look like this?

Well... There's a slight white edge at the top which is similar to mine but here's my image:

That's harmless and most likely just caused by the Antialiasing option in the general preferences. Check that by turning the option off or by printing out a test document.

In contrast, the issue illustrated in the orange image is very likely a serious one in Illustrator CS 2.

As I do not use CS 2 at the moment, would anyone of you CS 2 users make the following test:

    Document Raster Effect Settings:

    - Colour model: CMYK
    - Resolution: 300 ppi
    - Background: Transparent
    - Anti-alias: on
    - Add around object: 12,7 mm

Now, draw a filled path like in the orange image above, apply the Drop Shadow Effect:

    - Blending mode: normal
    - Opacity: 100 %
    - x- and y-distance: 0 mm
    - Blurring: 10 mm
    - Colour: white

Do you now see the white edges like the one in the orange image? I did see them in Illustrator CS 2 and it wasn't just an issue on screen. And it was reproduceable.

Doing the same in Illustrator CS 1 and Illustrator 10 causes no problems in that regard.

When you say "harmless", that may be true in terms of it not being a bug in the software but in terms of my logo it's a complete disaster & not something I could show my client.

My alternative is to create the logo without the shadow & put one in in Photoshop, meaning that I can't supply my client with a resolution independent master logo. :-(

Could you tell me if the only "anti-alias" option is the check box on the first page of the prefs?

I would bet anything that the average client would never notice what you call a complete disaster.
