Words, letters, separate selections in EPS file

  1. Default Words, letters, separate selections in EPS file

I inherited some eps files from a previous designer for some ads, supposedly done in Illustrator. I open them in Illustrator CS2 (I'm on a Mac G-4 running 10.4.6). Instead of the text being together as I would set it up, i.e., each section of text in its own box and sublayer so it can be easily moved, each word or sometimes each *letter* is in its own box, or sublayer! So, when I try to select and move text, I have to individually select and move all the little boxes at once. I ordinarily work with the layers palette to select groups like this, but everything is on one layer! And, of course, when I open up "Layer 1" in the layers palette, it scrolls down to kingdom come! What a pain!

I can't imagine why anyone would intentionally set up a file like this, so I'm thinking it has to be from some translation or conversion. When I open the files, I get a message saying the file is being "parsed". There are also lots of compound paths and clipping paths surrounding individual ads on a page. I doubt anyone who never uses multiple layers would use compound or clipping paths. (I'm not in a position to just ask him how he did this.)

For some of the files, I have retyped the text properly and segregated objects to different layers to make them more easily managed and organized. (Of course this is for my benefit, so I don't pull out any more of my own hair, and the client is not paying for this!) Has anyone ever come across something like this? Thanks.

They are legacy files o be expected but you can cut the text and make a new text frame and paste the text back in the frame. You first do a select all to select al the text. I think if you cut and paste the text as point text it will also work.

I doubt they did. It sounds more like a document that was printed/saved to
PDFfrom whatever app and then re-exported as EPS. You need the original doc
    and fonts.

If they don't have an AI file and can't get it, I'd have to wonder if they
actually own it or if they only had limited usage rights.

PS_Just read Wade's message. If it's not a legacy then the above probably
applies. If single letters of a word are actually separate text objects, I'd
    highly suspect the above.

If it is a legacy text issue (you should get a warning when opening the file), you might be able to prevent the text from breaking up IF you have an older, pre-CS version of Illustrator. (Version 10 was able to run under OS 9/Classic or OS X; you should be able to have both on your system--just make sure the correct version is running.)

    Open the file in the older version;
Select all the text (a select-all with the Selection tool should work)
Set the tracking and kerning to 0 (zero)
    Save as and quit
    Open the file in CS2
    Select all again
Set kerning back to auto (tracking will have to be manually adjusted)
    Save in new version
Hopefully, your text will not be broken up.

HOWEVER, your description does not sound like the legacy text.
Open the EPS file in a text editor and see if the originating program is listed.
They may not be Illustrator EPS files.

Does not matter if they are legacy or if they come from another program like word or as some people here refer to it as worst. The solution is the same to copy and paste in to a new text frame or to cut and paste onto a path. It maybe possible to open in Acrobat copy that text and paste that as well into Illustrator.
