I have a jpg that I need to change part of the color, while keep all the texture and effects. Think of it this way:

A jpg. with a red ball, 3D and textured. Under the ball in black color font it says "ball". I simply want to change the color of the ball without effecting the rest of the jpg. How can I do this? Thank you!!!

Illustrator is not an image editing program. You can edit the colour of part of the image in Photoshop. You might get by in Illustrator by drawing a new ball in a different colour then playing with the blending modes available in the Transparency palette. But Photoshop is probably a better tool for this.

Here is an example of what can be done via the Transparency method.

Original illustration (jpq file scanned from a 1949 children's book):

Vector objects drawn on top, roughly following edges of shapes (it is not necessary to be precise around the edges where the background is white, because I am planning to use the Color blend mode, which leaves white as white):

After changing the Blend mode to Color:

The placed image has not been changed.

Photoshop will of course give you much more flexibility, since it will let you alter the actual pixels.
