Keystroke for bold and italic

  1. Default Keystroke for bold and italic

In Illustrator CS2, is there any keystroke that can turn characters bold or italic? It seems so inefficient to have to use the drop down menu to choose those attributes. In MS office or CorelDraw, one merely uses the cntrl B or I.

Nope. You can't simply turn on Bold or Italic as you can in a dumb word processor. The style is only available if the font has a Bold or Italic style associated with it and installed.

    Michael:

As an afterthought to what Scott said- you can make some very simple Actions with shortcuts to switch between normal, bold, and italic font styles for those font families that have them.

Thanks, Steve. Yeah, the action works for this particular situation. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like I can JUST change the bold attribute. The action records ALL the attributes of the character when I create it. But, again, thanks for the suggestion. I often forget about the 'actions' solution.

Scott, CorelDraw has the ability to KNOW when a font has a bold or italic style association and only applies a bold attribute using cntrl b if it is available. That function's been around in Corel from almost day one. I'm sure there is a good reason AI has avoided this function. I just don't know what it is.

It is to prevent people from applying a fake bold style to a font that has no bold flavour. This has long been a problem in prepress.
