this seems to happen every year and i can't remember how to fix it. today the layer palette decided not to show up. F7 doesn't work, tools doesn't work, it's not hidden, and my screen resolution is at max size so i can't make it bihgger to see if the palette is just off the screen. would rather not have to reload 10 so any help is appreciated.

Hi, My daughter just had the same thing happen. What is the yearly aiprefs file search and destroy action? (And how do you do it?) Thanks! -gene (btw, she has illustrator 9)
Gene,
1. Close Illy,
2. Make a search including hidden files and folders for the Adobe Illustrator 9 folder (Wayne should find Adobe Illustrator 10),
3. Delete the AIPrefs file.
If that does not help, you may try moving the whole folder to the Desktop. If it happens again, you may create a shortcut to the folder and keep it on the Desktop.
Hi Jacob
Thanks for replying. I tried deleting the aipref file, but when I reloaded illustrator the layers palette was still missing from the action menu. It only shows actions and links, (layers is missing). On window, I have the option to show layers (f7), but pressing either f7 or show layers doesn't work. Any ideas? Thanks! -gene
Gene:
The crucial step you probably missed is "1. Close Illustrator". If you delete the aiprefs and then close Illustrator, the problem will be neatly preserved (Illustrator updates the aiprefs file upon closing). If you close Illustrator first, and then delete the aiprefs file, all will be well.

Hi Bert.
Hi Jacob,
I had closed illustrator first. I found the problem. The Layers Palette.aip file (or layers~1.aip) had become corrupted. That is a plug-in in the directory c:\program files\adobe\illustrator (version)\required. I still had a copy on an older computer (which is seldom used). I made a copy of the aip file and transfered it over. Illustrator now works fine. As to how a plug-in file became corrupted, who knows? -gene
Gene,
What is/was the full path to the file? I have not been able to locate anything like it.
