Limit on Number of Layers / Stuck on Saving

  1. Default Limit on Number of Layers / Stuck on Saving

Does anyone know if there is any sort of (theoretical) limit on the number of layers that Illustrator can handle?

I have a file, ~6mb, with 6 main layers containing around 62 sublayers, with numerous other sublayers and some containing hundreds/thousands of paths.

I was having no problem with the file, now for some reason, it takes anywhere between 2-3 hours to save the file. Illustrator gets stuck around the 40% mark saving, but will eventually end. I've tried copying and pasting (using the remember layers option) in a new file, but same problem.

Has anyone seen problems like this before?

    (I should add that I'm using AI.CS2)

I would suspect that problem has more to do with processor speed, graphics card, or RAM than with the program itself.

My best advice is to look for leaner ways to create your file.

I have created files in excess of 60 main layers many times, and have noted a few things that tend to bog down performance. These include: gradients, filters, a great number of (or big high-resolution) embedded bitmap images, or vector objects that just have an insane number of points/paths.

  3. Default Re: Limit on Number of Layers / Stuck on Saving

I don't think it's a CPU issue, as I've tested it on another machine, plus I tried a CS3 trial, and it gave me the same problem.
    (I'm using a 3.2ghz, 2gb RAM and 512mb V-Card.)

At the time, I was actually trying to reduce the number of paths.

I've also tried deleting preferences, and adding the 'enableContentRecovery' option. No dice.

  4. Default Re: Limit on Number of Layers / Stuck on Saving

This is just a shot in the dark, but I ran across this problem once or twice.

Sometimes, I'd accidently hit a shortcut key to paste an object, and inexplicably Illustrator would tuck the damn thing waaayyyyy out past the artboard, thus substantially increasing the perceived size of the document. You might want to check and make sure this didn't happen to you.

To find out if this happened, first make "show bounding box" is turned on, then click the selection tool, and type CTRL+A. If that bounding box goes way off the artboard, you may have found your culprit.

No luck on that either. I was able to copy and paste each individual layer into a new file and successfully save it. It still seems to freeze up, but save time is down to less than 10 minutes.

Interestingly enough, Illustrator does not copy empty/blank layers. I could see why it would do this to save memory, but it's a pain when you've set these up for future items.

  6. Default Re: Limit on Number of Layers / Stuck on Saving

I should also add that the more I work on this file (creating more layers/reducing number of paths), the time needed to save the file increases.

What was once >10minutes, it now +30 minutes.

Does anyone know if a corrupt symbol would cause this? (and if so, how does one debug?!)

  7. Default Re: Limit on Number of Layers / Stuck on Saving

IIRC There used to be a Wheelchair symbol that caused grief back in ai10, but that was fixed in later versions. Maybe if the file was originally created in ai10 or earlier, that symbol piggybacked along.

  8. Default Re: Limit on Number of Layers / Stuck on Saving

The reason I asked about the symbol, was that I noticed one of my created symbols was no longer in the library.
(Unfortunately my version is locked up trying to save this file to see if the wheelchair symbol is around.)

    I found this article: <http://ilab.usc.edu/rjpeters/faq.html#anchor45>

I recall reading somewhere else about doing the Ctrl+Shift+Alt trick. Has anyone been able to successfully create a new file doing this?

  9. Default Re: Limit on Number of Layers / Stuck on Saving

I've narrowed part of the issue down to a few sub-layers look like they could be the problem. If I delete these layers, the time-to-save-file decreases significantly.

For now I'll presume they're corrupt, and will have to re-draw the layers.
