Creating logo's : Adobe illustrator

Hello all
I want to create a logo in illustrator but don't want the background that I started out on to show up when I use that logo for other promotional materials. How can i do this? I'm using CS3

There is no background in an Illustator file. Artwork appears on a transparent workspace. Getting the image to appear transparent depends on the programs you are using, the formats you are saving or exporting to, and the final purpose of the logos (no apostrophe for plurals, please).

To be absolutely sure of not getting a background, save as a pdf before bringing into your application.

If you don't want the pdf file to be huge, save first as an .eps file then open that in Mac OSX's Preview and resave it as a .pdf.
