Stroke behind text - Is it possible? : Adobe illustrator
This is a discussion on Stroke behind text - Is it possible? within the Adobe illustrator forums in Adobe Tools category; I believe I did follow your directions carefully. I typed a line of text. Switched to the arrow tool. Clicked on the stroke flyout and set a width. The stroke is on top of the fill. I have over 25 years experience with graphics software. I've avoided Illustrator because in my opinion it's not as intuitive and easy to use as other vector drawing programs. I know a lot of people do a lot of great work with it, so I'm not saying it's not a capable program, but this is such a simple task I'm trying to perform that ...

I know a lot of people do a lot of great work with it, so I'm not saying it's not a capable program, but this is such a simple task I'm trying to perform that I feel it's either extremely unintuitive or it's just not working properly. What, if anything, did I miss in your last post?

Joe! You are the man! Thank you very much for making that clear, and Scott, thanks for your help too. Sorry if I didn't follow what you were saying. -Carl

So when I told you not to double click on the Character line, how did you interpret that?

It didn't make sense, because you didn't specifically say to add the stroke from the dropdown in the appearance palette. I was adding the stroke from the stroke palette, in which case the only way to see it in the appearance palette is to double-click the Characters line. Why isn't a stroke treated the same no matter how it is added?

Why isn't a stroke treated the same no matter how it is added? Welcome to the wild and wacky world of Illustrator. Consistency? Intuitiveness? Clearly names commands? A Jedi craves not these things.

That's why this Jedi has backed Coreldraw for 20+ years ;-) Thanks again for your help.

Carl, I assumed the stroke was added through the Appearance Palette because both stroke and fill were shown there: in 10 they are not shown when you add the stroke through the Stroke Palette or through the bottom of the Toolbox. You may say that in this case, 10 shows more clearly what is actually possible than does CS3.
