Stroke behind text - Is it possible? : Adobe illustrator

This is a discussion on Stroke behind text - Is it possible? within the Adobe illustrator forums in Adobe Tools category; I'm trying to create a template for someone and I have some text with a stroke on it. The problem is that I can't make the stroke go below the fill of the text without converting the text to outlines. I'd rather not make this a step for the user since they are not a graphics person. Default Stroke behind text - Is it possible?

I'm trying to create a template for someone and I have some text with a stroke on it. The problem is that I can't make the stroke go below the fill of the text without converting the text to outlines. I'd rather not make this a step for the user since they are not a graphics person. I'd also rather not have to have two layers of the same text, one above without the stroke and one below with the stroke.

Is there any way to make the stroke go behind the fill on a 'live' text object? There's got to be, but I can't figure it out!

Thanks

Carl,

In the Appearance Palette, drag the Stroke down beneath the Characters.

Thanks for the reply Jacob, but I tried this and the stroke layer just pops back to the top. I'm in CS3, btw. Can you do it and make it stick?

Hmmm, so either it is a bug in CS3, or there's another key to it.

Anyone?

Make sure you are doing this with the text object selected, not with highlighted text.

As soon as I double click on the Characters line to open the stroke and fill layers the entire line of text highlights. If I try to go back to the select tool the the stroke and fill layers roll back up into the characters layer.

What am I missing here (besides CorelDRAW!)?

Don't do that. Just select the text object with any arrow tool, then add the stroke.

I type the text and select it with the arrow tool. I apply fill and outline. Then I go to the appearance flyout and double-click the Characters line to reveal the stroke and fill layers at which point the text object becomes selected by the text tool, which has now replaced the arrow. If I attempt to drag the stroke layer below the fill, or the fill above the stroke, it highlights like it is able to be placed there, but then it snaps back to the original position.

I'm either missing the point, or there is a bug in CS3. What am I missing?
