This is a discussion on Re: Can't save in Illustrator CS2 within the Adobe illustrator forums in Adobe Tools category; yes illustrator seems to freak out if you have a bad font installed. We have even seen AI crashing in these scenarios. Other cases where AI can start throwing such messages is when you have a real complex type art (stuff with rotation , transparency, kerning applied etc..)...
