how to add text along a spiraling path
Hello, I am creating a christmas ball. The ball will be a circuit board and the ribbon will be a series of 1 and 0's. I don not know how to get the 1 and 0's to wrap areound the ribbon in different angles. I can get the test to go along the path, but I would like the text to flow with ribbon back and forth and not be always upright. I wish I could put the picture in this post, but I do not know how to do that either.
I reviewed a post "Spiral Using 3D Extrude and Mapping", but it was hard for me to follow and it is exactly what I am trying to do. Can anyone give me simple instructions?
Thank you,
T

Re: how to add text along a spiraling path
Treza,
When you have an image on a website (image.extension) on a website (yourdomain.topdomain), you can link to it by copying/writing this into your message (folders are optional, .extension may be .gif, .jpg, etc.):
<a href="http://www.yourdomain.topdomain/folder1/folder2/.../imagename.extension"><img src="http://www.yourdomain.topdomain/folder1/folder2/.../imagename.extension" alt="" border="0"></a>
To keep the forum format, please do not post images wider than 680px.
If you do not have access to a website, you may upload the image to one of the free image hosting sites, such as pixentral.com, photobucket.com, imageshack.com.

Here is an exact example of what I am trying to do. See how the text sprials around with the ribbon? I have tried to follow the instructions and it does not work. Perhaps, someone could explain or give me a simple explanation...
thanks,

Re: how to add text along a spiraling path
Can you view what I am trying to do. I am able to create the effect in pdf file, but, but, but, it is not a continuous string. I have tried different variations and I am unable to get a string of 1's and 0's. only broken strings that are all over the place in diferent directions.
Thanks,
T

Re: how to add text along a spiraling path
I wrote this tutorial for ya. I hope it helps!
For this tutorial make sure the two elements you create are always visible on your art board.
1. Draw a squiggly line with no fill of whatever length you want. (This if going to be your ribbon.
2. Go to Effect>3D>Extrude&Bevel
3. Play with the angles, Perspective and Extrude Depth until the ribon looks how you want it.
4. Hit OK. (For Now)
5. Create 1's and 0's using the text tool. Make sure they're about as long as your ribbon.
6. Outline the text using Ctrl+Shift+O
7. Drag this text object to your symbols pallette and it will prompt you yo make a new symbol. Give it a good name.
8. Click on your ribbon again and double click on "extrude and Bevel" in the "appearence" pallette.
9.Click on "Map Art..."
10. Click on the right arrow next to "Surface: " until you see the proper surface highlighted in red on the wireframe model on your artboard. The window shows a representation of that surface in the box below.
11. Check the checkboxes next to "Invisible Geometry" and "Shade Artwork"
12.Click on the "Symbol" pull-down menu and select your 1's and 0's symbol you just created.
13. Scale the symbol and drag it around the artwork until you get the desired results.
12. Click OK
From here you can click "More Options" and play with the lighting if you so wish.
I hope this helps!
