Indesign: Unable to remove guides

  1. Default Indesign: Unable to remove guides

I'm using InDesign CS2 on PC and recently encounted a document with 3 sets of guides (orange, dark green and dark purple) which I can't remove, select or move. These guides are not on a separate layer, they are not locked in place (that is, I don't have the option to unlock them) and they are not on the master page. These guides are not bleed guides, slug guides, normal guides, margin or column guides, nor grid lines.

Can someone shed some light on what they are and how to remove them?

    Many thanks!
    Karen T.

    Can you post a picture?

I presume you've tried the general unlock guides command and then tried to select them, as well as making sure guides are visible when viewing the master page.

    Hi Karen

Could it be that your doc has multiple layers and that throughout the course of your work you have added guides when working on different layers. This would answer the guides having different colors question.

Try clicking on different layers and selecting each guide to see if it will highlight and delete.

You might also double-click on each layer and see if the LOCK GUIDES is checked on in THAT box. That will show you a different option than the right mouse click option.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks Peter, I'll upload an image of it when I'm back at work. And yes, I've tried the unlock guides and toggle the visibility command with no results.

Hi David, the document only has one layer and the guides are indicated as unlocked.

The thing is, I'm not entirely that bothered by the guides because I can just hide them or copy over existing contents to a new document. What bothers me is that I can't solve this problem!

Umm... how do I post an image? Or do I have to post it on a site somewhere and link it back?

    Right

I think I now what your problem is. I experienced the exact same problem with a document created in Indesign CS2. Guides are stuck and can't be removed. I tried:

    - unlocking all layers
    - checking all master pages
    - unlocking the guides under View > Grids & Guides
    - checking that the guides are not locked with Object > Lock Position
    - removing all guides with the "Remove Existing Ruler Guides"-checkbox in the Create Guides function.
    - Saving as inx, and opening again
    - Opening the document in CS3, saving as inx and back

Nothing helped. And the problem seemed to remain in the document. When I dragged new guides from the rulers they got the same problem. But only if they were placed on one specific layer. So I doubleclicked on the layer to access the layer settings and there it was. The checkbox Lock Guides was active. I rarely use this box so I never think about it. I unchecked it and it worked fine.

    Really hope this helps.
