INDS2 Need feathered effect only on one side(kind of "Rocket trail" effect)

  1. Default INDS2 Need feathered effect only on one side(kind of "Rocket trail" effect)

    Hi,
I am trying to create a feathered effect for headers which is actually similiar to that used in the 'Indesign Essentials' tutor book (where it has a strip of colour which fades away down the outer side of each page, except mine will be along the top). I know how to create a feather effect on all four sides, but how do I create the effect of a strip of colour dissaperaing only on one side?

    Many thanks,
    Rachel

    Use a gradient.

From the swatches palette flyout menu select "new Gradient swatch" -- it should be pretty self-explanatory.

To apply the gradient select the new gradient swatch as the fill color and use the gradient tool to drag across the frame in the direction you want the gradient to run. Just as in Photoshop, where you start and stop dragging controls where the gradation starts and stops so you can have large areas on either end of the end colors, or drag beyond the frame edges to clip.

Make the object much larger and apply the feather. Cut it and paste it
into a new frame. Use the new frame the "crop" the three sides you want
    solid.

Unless this needs to show something behind it I can't see any benefit to introducing transparency to the page when using a gradient will accomplish the same thing, and probably with more control.

Same idea, different problem. I want to use a gradient background with a 'feathered' photo on top so it blends into the gradient.
The background full width is 780 pixels, the photo is 200 pixels set to the left. Only the right side of the photo would be feathered.
    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks, Donna

In CS3 I think this is doable with the gradient feather tool, but I'm afraid that in CS2 you need to either feather the image in Photoshop (you can do this with a gradient filled layer mask, for example) or you will need to add blank canvas to the image that you can crop away in InDesign after applying your feather.
