Under Window, check Swatch and notice the lined box (stroke) and solid box (fill) in upper left hand corner. You can figure it out from there. (Hint: the white box with a slanted red line in it means "no fill")
This is a discussion on How to make help work, and color a rectangle border - Adobe Indesign ; My help doesn't work, files are there, I found them accidentally... also this is basic but I can't find it. How to make the stroke of a rectangle colored, NOT fill the rectangle with color... Thanks...

Lamar,
I really think you need to take a step back and spend some time with a
good book or two.
Sandee Cohen's Visual Quick Start Guide is now available and is a great
resource for beginners. Highly recommended and very easy to follow.

If help doesn't work from the button in InDesign try running
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Help\en_US\InDesign\5.0\help.html
in your browser.
Assuming, of course, you are using CS3.
