InDesign - Export to PDF (File too large)

  1. Default InDesign - Export to PDF (File too large)

    Photoshop/ InDesign /PDF

I am working on a Windows based platform using Abobe CS3 and I am having trouble exporting an InDesign file to PDF for web viewing. The file is too large.

The original document (an annual report) was created in InDesign and contains images created in Photoshop, then further manipulated in InDesign. There are several jpg images with fairly uncomplicated effects (i.e. gradient and transparency).

The PDF is over 1000 KB and ideally I would like to get it down to approx. 500 KB. I tried going back into Photoshop and downsampling the images. This helped reduce the pdf a bit, but not significantly. Does anyone have tips for reducing jpg’s in Photoshop without compromising the image quality? or further reducing a PDF in Abobe Professional 8?

Any help would be greatly appreaciated.

I tried going back into Photoshop and downsampling the images.

That is pretty much a useless step. The PDF size is based on your PDF export settings in InDesign. You can place a 200 MB image in InDesign and have InDesign produce a 500 KB PDF file with the right PDF export settings.

There is only so much control one has in reducing file size. Try reducing the number of pages or remove the photos from your layout.

No need to go back to Photoshop. Just change the Export to PDF Preset to
one with lower Compression options. Start with Smallest File Size. If
that doesn't do it, then just type in lower numbers.

Obviously, though, getting a smaller file is a tradeoff to lower
quality. The lower you go, the worse it's going to look. By changing the
Presets, though, you can experiment without ruining your graphics.

I agree that downsampling the images again wouldn't help.
However, the PDF Optimizer in Acrobat 8 (and, I believe in 7) Pro does a great job. I'd use that before I did any minor tweaking.
