PS. Re the quotation in the post above ("The only available Caslon face is 'Regular'. There are 5 Adobe Caslon faces installed in Windows\Fonts.") Could this mean Caslon Regular wasn't in Windows\Fonts (and thus could have been in the Adobe fonts folder) or is it just an example of your 5/6 variants terminology?

There are 5 Adobe Caslon faces installed in Windows\Fonts.") Could this mean Caslon
Regular wasn't in Windows\Fonts (and thus could have been in the Adobe fonts folder) or is
it just an example of your 5/6 variants terminology?
It's most probably just a simple typo. I quite often hit 5 instead of 6, or vice versa.

Re: CS3: Fonts missing even though installed in Windows\Fonts
Dominic:
You say I had a faulty setting re TT fonts in apps and I did that BEFORE installing CS3.
For the purpose of discussion, let's say you are correct about that.
So this would be the sequence:
1. Set the switch to show only TT fonts in application font menus
2. Install CS3.
Note that after that is done, Adobe fonts from CS3 are in Windows\Fonts and pre-existing
fonts from CS2 are in Adobe's private fonts directory. All Caslon flavors are present in
both places. They are all OTF fonts with PS outlines. There are no other Caslon fonts on
the computer.
3. Uninstall CS2 (in 2 steps, though it shouldn't matter)
Note that now the CS2 fonts in Adobe's fonts directory have been removed. Adobe fonts are
found only in Windows\Fonts; all Caslon flavors are present there. Again, all OTF fonts
with PS outlines. No other Caslon fonts on the machine.
4. Start ID5 for the first time and open a pre-existing ID4 document that uses Adobe
Caslon Pro Bold. Message is that the Caslon Bold font is missing.
5. Open the ID5 font dropdown. I find Adobe Caslon Pro; it's not in brackets. In the
"subfamily" dropdown I see ONLY Regular. That fits with the message, i.e. Bold is missing,
6. Check Windows\Fonts: the bold variant IS there.
I KNOW that steps 2-6 are EXACTLY what happened. The only change from reality is the time
at which step #1 occurred -- whether it occurred first or not until just before step 4.
What is your explanation for this sequence? How could it be the incorrect TT switch? If
that were it, I wouldn't see Adobe Caslon Pro on the font menu. And it can't be font files
in the wrong places: they ARE in Windows\Fonts. If they weren't, again I wouldn't see
Adobe Caslon Pro on the font menu.
To continue,
7. Quit ID5, copy all Adobe Caslon Pro fonts from Windows\Fonts to the Adobe fonts folder,
restart ID5 and open the document again. Now all is well. There are no missing fonts and
the document prints without errors. This means to me that the Adobe Caslon Pro Bold font
is NOT corrupted.
Step 7 is also EXACTLY what happened.
What could be happening here that could be explained *solely* by user error, rather than a
problem with the installer?
