Words become bunched up in PDF

  1. Default Re: Words become bunched up in PDF

Acrobat 7 shows that as well. And not just the black.

Windows shows all my Myriad Pro fonts as Open Type with Unicode encoding.

The export preset I use for web pages has Acrobat 5 (PDF 1.4) compatibility and the fonts are subset. I have no idea why
the font description is changed in the PDF.

    Is Dov around?

    Ken,

The ligatures in the body copy appear to be fine (pardon the ligature)

  3. Default Re: Words become bunched up in PDF

    Granted.

Thanks Peter. I've modified my headline styles not to use ligatures. On reflection, they probably don't work as well in
headlines as they do in body text, so it may actually be an improvement.

It would be interesting to nail down this odd display behaviour. But there seem to be a few too many variables at
present - Acrobat 7/8, the font, the weight, and what happens to the font between InDesign and PDF to lead Acrobat to
report apparent changes in format and encoding.

Thanks again to you and the others who took a look.

As always, you're more than welcome.

I'm having a similar problem with Myriad MM postscript fonts. Instead of being bunched up, they are letterspaced after being exported to PDF from CS3.

I'm using Windows XP SP2, InDesign CS3 5.0.2, Pentium 3 GHz processor, 3 GB RAM

The letter spacing affects Myriad MM Italic 215 LT 300 CN and Myriad MM 830 BL 300 CN but not other Myriad MM styles. Some affected type shows Custom encoding, but others also showing custom encoding are not affected.

This problem did not occur with this typeface in CS2.

    Any suggestions?

    Natesh

The problem that Stuart was having at the top of this thread seemed to be due to using a Mac viewer to look at the PDF,
which was otherwise OK. He posted a jpg of his problem, but not an actual PDF so it hasn't been possible to check what
it looks like in Acrobat or Reader.

My problem seemed to occur when using version 8 of Acrobat and Reader, but not, as far as I can tell, when using version 7.

So. Can you post one of these misbehaving PDFs so it can be checked in Acrobat and Reader to see whether it's a problem
in the PDF or a problem viewing the PDF?

As you have started a new thread with this same question ("CS3 Unwanted Font Spacing after Export to PDF") and posted a
file example, it's probably best to go there for any further response.

Here's a link to my misbehaving PDF. Hope it helps.

Thanks Stuart. That looks fine here in Acrobat 7. The Drinks and Prize lines are not bunched at all. Maybe someone with
Acrobat 8 could take a look.

Interesting coincidence maybe, but that type is also in Myriad Pro, the face which was causing me problems and
indirectly, because it's a different version, the face that has caused problems for Natesh Daniel.

Acrobat identifies the font with a large letter F, which I don't recognise. Does this denote a Mac font?

It opened perfectly, including the ligature in raffle, on Acrobat 8 here, which doesn't surprise me since it is opening in Acrobat rather than the browser, where Kens file had issues.

Ken, can you give me a hint where you see that big F so I know what to look for?

    Peter
