in the past, if I used inset spacing, I would get a (non-printing) double frame around the text box which would allow me to see at a glance which text boxes use inset spacing and which do not. for some reason, that double frame is now just a single frame. the inner frame is gone. it's really annoying! I suppose I may have accidentally "hidden" the inner frame or something. does anyone know how to turn it back on? thanks -bf

I see the double-frame when I select with the pointer tool but not with the text tool. Which are you using? Dave

Dave, I select with the pointer tool too, but I'm still not seeing the double frame like I should. I just noticed that if I make a new document and use inset spacing, I can see the double frame ok. This error is only happening to old documents. maybe it's a weird issue with docs that were originally created in an older version of indesign? it's annoying because I can't tell at a glance if I created padding by using inset spacing or paragraph indents. thanks, -b

Try the direct select tool. Peter

ah that makes more sense! Stuff i'm designing from a new template has the double frame edge, but old docs from indesign 2 that i'm opening in indesign3 don't have the double frame edge. So all is clear now. Thanks!

I finally manged to fix the issue! There was simply something wrong with the document.(Peter, thanks for your input, but I have been using the direct select tool.) I got the fix from "Frequently Encountered Problems" by Dave Saunders. I chose to export my document to the InDesign Interchange format and then open the exported document. I made sure to not overwrite my original doc, just in case. It worked beautifully. All of the "double frame" text boxes are showing normally now when I select them. thanks to everyone for your help!
