Booklet - How to set up to get 2 booklets after cut page in half

  1. Default Booklet - How to set up to get 2 booklets after cut page in half

I am new to PageMaker. I have PageMaker 7.0 and I use Windows XP on my Dell computer. My pinter is an OfficeJet 655 xi. I want to use an 8 1/2 x 11 paper and put two sets of each page on one page (11 wide by 8.5 tall). The booklet will be 40 pages and the pages will be numbered. What size text boxes will I have to use so that the margins are the same on both Left and Right and back and front? Is there an adjustment that has to be made for the right side of the page, as the printer has a smaller printing space on that side. Any help at all would be appreciated.

I'm not sure I follow what you're saying but creating a booklet in PM is straightforward.

Create your booklet as if you were reading on the screen.

Your document setup would look like this (sorry, I only work with ISO sized paper).

Then run PM's "Build Booklet" utility which creates 20 A4 landscape pages which is 10 duplexed sheets. "Build Booklet" attends to page numbering but does not handle images which spread over two pages.

I am going to contradict John. You said you wanted two of each page on each sheet of paper. Set your pages up as 8.5x11 sheets landscape with two columns. Set your margins and gutter large enough to avoid the non-printing region of your printer. Set up each page on the left side of the sheet, then copy/paste multiple to the right side of the sheet. Once you have all the pages done, you can print them to your printer and duplex if necessary. If you need to you can also check the facing pages in document setup which may help you if the printing is to be two-sided sheets (ie: page number positioning, header and footer positioning. Once you print, you can cut each stack of paper in half and you will have two books.

    John and Stan,

I guess I didn't make myself very clear. Sorry. The printed paper will be landscape. There should be (for example) two Page 1's on the top and on the bottom of the left side of a piece of paper. On the right side of that paper, there would be a Page 2 on the top and on the bottom. The finished book will get two sets out of the 10 duplex printed pages of paper by cutting it in half horizontally.

Would Stan's answer be correct except that the columns should be changed to text boxes?

And thanks so much for your help.

I guess the answer now depends on how the book will be bound. If I understand correctly, the finished size of the book after binding will be 4.25 inches tall by 5.5 inches wide approximately. Is this correct? If your finished printed sheets (after cutting) will be folded in half and stapled in the spine (that is called saddle stitching) you will want to set up your pages as 5.5 inches wide by 8.5 inches tall, and check the boxes that says double sided and facing pages. I would drag some guidelines onto the master pages to divide the pages in half top and bottom and allow for margins in the center of the page. Then create your pages in the top half of the sheet, copy/paste multiple to the bottom of the sheet. Once you have finished the book, use the Build Booklet plugin to create a book using the 2 up Saddle Stitch option which will repaginate your document into printer's spreads. Then it can be printed, cut in half and saddle stitched to make into booklets.

This is basically a combination of what John and I both said in our first posts. You can rearrange the dimensions if I did not understand correctly in which case the 5.5 inch tall by 4.25 inch wide folded would require 4.25 inch wide by 11 inch tall sheets.
