Fonts keep substituting in pagemaker; ignoring typemanager

This is a discussion on Fonts keep substituting in pagemaker; ignoring typemanager within the Adobe Pagemaker forums in Adobe Tools category; I am using pagemaker 7.0. The three fonts I use in the annual publication: Helvetica, helvetica narrow and palatino, are all showing in type manager (ATM 4.0) but when I open the publication they are substituted as (I think it is Raavi, Gautami and Palatino linotype). I have converted to a new operating system Vista since completing the publication mid 2007. Now I am up against deadline and can't make headway....can anyone help??? I have tried reloading the PS fonts Helv, Helv-Narr and Palatino into Adobe Type Manager and though it has worked while the publication was open, once I close it I lose the typefaces and therefore when I reopen the publication I get the substitutions again....thanks and regards, Caroline

Hello, Caroline,

The bottom line is that for PM7/Vista all bets are off. You really need to move on to Indesign. See:
* John Davies, "7.9 - PageMaker and Microsoft Windows Vista" #1, 20 Mar 2007 7:31 pm </webx?14@@.3bc375a1/0>

ATM is not designed for Vista either, but you probably need it if you're using Multiple Master fonts. See:
* Thomas Phinney, "ATM 4.1 uninstall under Vista" #1, 6 Sep 2007 3:27 am </webx?14@@.3bc7ea5e/0>

You could try trashing the PM configuration files, all files fitting the mask *fnt*.lst and checking you have the correct "Compose to" printer active in PM, but there's no guarantee.

You could always revert to WinXP…

Iechyd da! John

You have nothing but problems with that system. ATM 4.0 was only for Win
9x systems and even 4.1 isn't certified for Vista. Installing 4.0 can
seriously break the operating system's ability to handle fonts.

Based on your post, I'd blow the whole machine out, reinstall Windows
and upgrade to InDesign. Trying to use PM on Vista is nothing short of a
crapshoot.

Installing ATM 4.0, if it is the Windows 98 version, will have done
nothing.
Installing ATM 4.0, if it is the Windows NT version, may have done
serious damage to fonts which uninstalling WILL NOT FIX (and may make
worse).

If you are committed to ancient software, I recommend being consistent
with it. Upgrading part, especially the operating system, is asking
for horrendous problems. You are just seeing the start. In other
words, get rid of Vista and go back.
