What are you trying to do? If you want to install fonts, install them through Windows or through a type manager (though I doubt you're using a type manager).

You don't!

See this page in the Adobe KB about installing fonts.

let me clarify. this is a two part problem with pagemaker 7 under windows xp. First part: Pagemaker shows a font 'Galliard' which I've used in a document. When I try to export to a pdf and embed font I'm not permitted to. Second part: I decided to substitute another Galliard face which is shown in the windows font file but is not shown in the drop down font menu for pagemaker. Even more confusing, is that in the pdf menu for font embedding 'Galliard' is not shown but all the other fonts in the windows font file are.

I've been told to delete fonts in the adobefnt.lst file and reinstall fonts from original media. As with many others, I've collected font faces over the years and have a master font file I carry around on a jump drive. If I cannot add fonts to this file what do I do? Forgive my ignorance but does pagemaker rebuild this file from the windows font file?

In the past, saving for a service provider was no problem, just include font pack and be done with it. Now I've been asked to send hi-res pdf with embedded fonts.

I've used Pagemaker for over 10 years and now I'm stumped.

So you've been using it since it died?

If you're doing serious work it's time to bury your old friend and start
using InDesign.

It is possible that the reason you can't embed Galliard is because it is not licensed for embedding. Have you ruled out that possibility?

I've been told to delete fonts in the adobefnt.lst file

If someone told you that then they don't know what they're talking about. It is possible someone told you to delete all adobefnt.lst files because they get regenerated, but that's quite different from adding fonts to or deleting them from that file. If you need to reinstall fonts, just remove and reinstall them from Windows as usual.

You should have told to delete the adobefnt*.lst files, (which are regenerated the next time PM loads), and if that didn't work, to remove and re-install any suspect fonts.
