I have a new Vista Home Premium laptop. I would like to be able to run Pagemaker 7. I know it is PM is obsolete but I don't need it that often and I know how to use it. I was happy for years using PM 4.0 student edition on my old powermac. I have PM 6.5 on my Mac G4 OS 9.2. I got a deal on PM 7 to use on our Windows xp machine a couple of years ago. Now I would like to use it on my new Vista. I have tried to install it (from the cd) and it won't install. I checked off xp compatibility and administrator using the compatibility wizard. The install dialog comes up, I click the button to install pagemaker and nothing happens. Can anyone help me?

PM 7 on Vista like PM 7 on OSX...a real crapshoot. If you want to run it then I suggest holding on to an old machine. Bob

I know it is not supported. But I saw several posts from people who said they got it to work. I won't be using it often and I am hanging on to the xp laptop and I still have my Mac. However, I would like to be able to do a few simple documents on my new laptop. I don't care if pdf and spell check don't work. If I can't get Pagemaker to work on the vista I will be stuck using Publisher 2003 and I really don't like Publisher. If I had unlimited funds I would get In Design but I just spent all my money on a new PC. I was really hoping that the xp compatibility feature would work on my old software. I forgot to check on PM before I chose Vista over XP. Anyway, if there is a chance for PM to work on my version of Vista I would like some installation hints. Otherwise I will have to put up with Publisher. My laptop is 64 bit. Would that make a difference? If I ever get enough money ahead maybe I will take a class at the community college and get a CS bundle with InDesign at the student rate. Hopefully before my vista laptop becomes obsolete.

> My laptop is 64 bit. Would that make a difference? It sure would. You made the right choice in operating systems (I love Vista 64) but trying to get PM to install and run on it is going to be a real challenge. CS3 runs beautifully on Vista 64. It's the way to go. Bob

Gee, I went with Windows since my old Windows software had a better chance of running on Vista than my old Mac software did of running on Leopard (0%). So, do you have any tips for getting old software to install on Vista 64 or do I resign myself to Publisher until I can afford to upgrade to ID? Glad to hear that you like Vista 64. I considered getting an XP but figured that since I upgrade so infrequently that it would be foolish to get a new computer running XP when it is on the way out. Hmm, I do have a copy of xp professional. I noticed some threads where people discussed using a virtual PC program to run xp on their vista machines. Any opinion on that? Can you point me in the right direction to learn more about it? I have a Toshiba Satellite A305, Vista Home Premium Service Pack 1, Intel Core Duo CPU, 2.00 GHZ, 4.00GB, 64 bit, 296 GB hd.

You might have some kind of chance with Vista 32 bit, but 64 bit is just too much of a stretch in my opinion. Sorry, but I just can't see wasting time trying to get PM to install and run. You could try an XP/Vista dual boot, but you do realize that you can upgrade to InDesign for $199.00, right? I don't know how much longer that deal is going to be around for, though. Bob

Yes, I am considering Virtual PC. $199 is a quite a lot right now for me. And I have other older software that I would like to keep using. Virtual PC is free and I already own XP pro and PM 7. I checked the Virtual PC forum and though vista home premium 64-bit is not officially supported some people have got it to run. I will give it a try. Someday, when I have the time and money I will enroll in a class at the community college and I will be able to get the whole suite for about $600. If I ever actually find myself making money off of one of the programs I will spring for a non-education version upgrade since the theoretical income will pay for it.

Assuming you're in the U.S., the academic version carries with it only one restriction over and above the commercial version. You can't transfer or sell it. You can use it for commercial work. Bob
