Question about Premiere Pro

  1. Default Question about Premiere Pro

    Hi all,
I am thinking about buying Premiere Pro. I would like to know how hard is it to learn, what problems people have been having with it and how is Tech Support?
I currently have Pinnacle 9 and am having major problems with rendering. So far nobody in tech support can fix my problem. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you,
    Ed

Ed -- PPro is a difficult program to learn if you know nothing about non-linear editing. If you are familiar with NLE concepts it's not difficult at all. But "easy" and "difficult" are wildly subjective descriptors. In professional editing, the better descriptors are "facile" or "cumbersome".

For me, PPro is somewhere in between but closer to "cumbersome". Like any Adobe program it is designed for a single operator, primarily working alone, who has all the time in the world to complete projects. Other users, especially those who have mastered the many keyboard shortcuts, find PPro to be a wonderfully facile tool. Adobe Tech support, I'm told, is pretty good though not free except for installation problems.

Why not spend an hour or so browsing this forum. You'll likely come away with a pretty good idea of what aspects of PPro are the most troublesome to a variety of users.

I agree with Peter's observation about being familiar with NLE.
Final Cut Pro, Avid & Prem Pro are pretty similar to each other.
I dumped Final Cut Pro (it was slow as death and every change required rendering) nearly 3 years ago to work with Premiere 6.5
and the Matrox RTX Xtreme video card. There was a learning curve because Premiere was using that cumbersome A/B roll configuration.
I was willing to put up with that to get real time effects from the RTX. I was probably one of the first guys in So Cal. to buy Premiere Pro when it was releases at the Kodak Theater demonstration. It didn't take long for me to fall in love with it. Learning the system will take a while but if you're using a fast computer (hyperthreading CPU) or the RTX card it won't take long. Real time results make a world of difference when you're experimenting. Total Training has a $100 tutorial DVD that is well worth the C note.
I think everyone would agree there is no such thing as the perfect NLE. Pre Pro is a very powerful tool. And like any other tool, the more familiar you are with it, the more you can get from it. And my last word on the subject is to make sure you get the right computer, the software is installed properly and the preferences meet YOUR needs.

Another way to get a feeling for the way that Premiere works is to watch someone who really knows the program.

Curt Wrigley's video tutorials give a free look into the world of Premiere editing. Visit

and enjoy watching a master at work.
