My Web site is in GL CS. I am revising it. But I bought a copy of GL 9 and opened various pages in that version. Then I decided not to use GL 9. However the .site shows as a GL 9 file. Also I had moved it to the desktop. Where do I move that file? To the .data folder? To a folder in that folder? How do I open the .site in GL CS, that had become a GL 9?

You should probably just create a new site file from existing content in CS, that will be the easiest way.

Lost my site window in GL CS > You should probably just create a new site file from existing content in CS Jon, Forgive my ignorance. But HOW do I create a new site file? I am sure that would be the easiest thing to do. I have looked at two GL manuals and I don’t know how to do that. My Web site currently has maybe 40 existing pages and I don’t want to blitzkrieg all the links. So how do I do what you suggest? Thank you.

File > New > Site > Site From Existing Content > Browse to the folder that your index.html page is in. It won't move anything, so all of your links will be fine, your basically just telling GL what folder your index page is in so it can populate your site window.

Jon, we're close, not quite solved. You had said: "File > New > Site > Site From Existing Content > Browse to the folder that your index.html page is in. It won't move anything, so all of your links will be fine..." In GL 7 (CS) the route was slightly different: File > New site > GL Site Wizard > Single User radio button > Import from folder radio button (one of four available to choose from) > Browse > Folder with the site in it. Here are the glitches: I put the new .site file in the same folder that holds the folder with the Web site in it. That folder has a folder with the Web site, one with the .data name and one with the .settings name. Which should the new .site file go in? And last (I hope): Because I have a later version GL 9 in the app folder, some files, including the new .site file show up as version 9 files. Using Get Info I can change them to open with GL CS. How do I get rid of GL 9 without deleting it altogether (as my copy was bought online from Adobe andno disks are available to reinstall in the future).

You should be fine as long as you open CS first, don't double click a file to launch the application - usually the latest version you have installed will open if you do that. Your new site file should sit right beside the old one, inside your umbrella/project folder that holds your entire site, files, folders etc.

Kath, Thanks. Two parts to my reply. 1. You write, "You should be fine as long as you open CS first, don't double click a file to launch the application - usually the latest version you have installed will open if you do that." That is great advice. Should completely solve the unexpected problem I was running into. 2. You write, "Your new site file should sit right beside the old one, inside your umbrella/project folder that holds your entire site, files, folders etc." "The old one" does not exist so let me ask this, I hope, final question. Here's what I have and please tell me where the new .site I created goes: Macinstosh HD > Web folder > which contains the new mysite.site file which I created yesterday after getting advice here. It also contains various folders, the three related ones being mysite (contains all the pages, plus an Images folder, and a Generated Items folder); mysite.data (contains a variety of GoLive folders such as Components, Site Trash and so on); and the mysite.settings folder (which contains a dozen .xml files. Is the new mysite.site file in the right place or does it go in one of those other folders? Since I have lost the original .site I do not recall where that went, which is why I am asking. Hope I am clear.

That sounds right - launch CS, navigate to mysite.site and see what happens ![]() It would be better though to have your site file and the other folders inside one specific to that site rather than a general Web folder. I hope this doesn't confuse you because I was still using version 6 at the time and I skipped CS, but I think it should be relevant (click) <http://www.golivebasics.com/startout/new2.html> This shows the preferred structure at that time, it changed with CS2. Note 'wombat folder' holds everyting to do with the wombat site. When you make your next site, it will want its own folder with a relevant name to hold everything.

If you've already made a new site file, but it's in the wrong place, don't try and move it, make another in the right place. Beside your data folder etc.

It would be better though to have your site file and the other folders inside one specific to that site rather than a general Web folder Well it was in the right place after all. I did as bidden. Opened GL CS not the file. Then opened the page. Checked things. all is well. (Or so I think. So far dot dot dot...) You are precise and clear and I like that. I may start a new thread soon (???) dealing with replacing existing components. I have two manuals and sometimes ain't that clear. Thanks for the visual reference which I am printing out. This forum is actually useful. Why didn't I do this before. Always good to meet helpful upbeat people. Maybe one day I can become one :-)
