It's a waste of your time and money.

Definitely.

You could start with Google's own advice: <http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=35769>

You could also rebuild your car's transmission yourself and do your own dental work. Or you could defer to someone who does it well and does it every day. Having said that the range of fees being charged for SEO services is completely random, so do your homework.

It comes down to whether or not you perceive there to be value in SEO as a concept. If you think that there is value in it then you're not going to think it's a waste of money. if you don't see any value in it then paying someone to do it is "a waste of your time and money". Good luck with that at-home root canal kit.

The problem is, I HAVE rebuilt my car's transmission!
But I'm not sure I want to do my own dental work.
:-)

For me, it's a question of: Do I have the patience to do all the annoying things necessary to get my ranking up? But it sounds like a lot of it has to do with building the site (or at least having the right content) properly in the first place. So then do I want someone else monkeying around with the code for the site(s) I've built? Probably not.

Also, I just heard this:

"Google no longer indexes metatag: keywords.
Without keywords, all it looks for is page name and text on the page.
Title tag without text on the page is also not indexed."

Can anyone confirm this?

That's nonsense. There is huge value in SEO. And as Kath says, it's not
hard. Paying someone to do it AFTER THE SITE HAS BEEN BUILT IS A WASTE OF
TIME AND MONEY. What you get from these charlatains is a bunch of keyword
meta tags, and hidden text.

The SEO goes in as the site is being built.
