| For historical reasons. phil chastney wrote: > APL Enthusiast wrote: >> Has anybody found the source assembler for this? > > do you mean the thing that ran on CDC machinery? > > if so, what did you propose to run it one? > > if not, perhaps you could be a bit more specific? > > but, either way, I'm sorry I can't help -- I doubt if I've even > retained any APLUM documentation . . . /phil |

| there was a thread on this ng, some time ago, cross-posted to an historically-oriented ng, where APLUM was definitely discussed try Google, I guess, and see if you can turn up a more productive set of contacts I suspect you'll need to search the msgs, not just the headers I wish you luck . . . /phil |

| Thanks. Actually Ibeam2000 and I talked about this after that thread. Ends up we hadn't talked in about 28 years. He still had notes I shared with him from that time. That forced me to look in an old folder and find out that I still had a copy of "An APL Interpreter in Pascal" (from Byte Publications), an associated article in Byte Magazine which preceded the contest and a function dump of an APL advanced interpreter written in APL (missing key variables though). But no APLUM. Scanning the network, I found that Multics code had been released and that copies of EMPL and MAPL source were available. I also discovered from John E. Howland that the code for APL/V80 (aka APL/Z80) source was probably not available. He identified: "The old Vanguard Systems company was merged with another company at the time (about 1982) that company was taken public on the NASDQ . That company was not interested in APL/V80 (same as APL/Z80 but Zilog refused the use of Z80 in defense of their trademark), but refused access to the source. They were only interested in other Vanguard assets but did not disclose there non-interest in APL/Z80 before the merger." phil chastney wrote: > there was a thread on this ng, some time ago, cross-posted to an > historically-oriented ng, where APLUM was definitely discussed > > try Google, I guess, and see if you can turn up a more productive set of > contacts > > I suspect you'll need to search the msgs, not just the headers > > I wish you luck . . . /phil |

| Your best bet would be to contact the Computer Science Department at UMass Amherst, where APLUM was developed. As was noted in another note in this thread, this code was developed for the Control Data 6000/Cyber instruction set and is probably no longer functional. | See http://members.iinet.net.au/~tom-hunter/ for "Desktop CYBER Emulator". This comes courtesy of the alt.folklore.computers newsgroup where I don't see any hit on "APLUM". Curtis Jones |
