| Changes at the British APL Association At the Extraordinary General Meeting held on 19 January 2008 at the BCS headquarters in London the result of the vote on the resolution to end our affiliation to the British Computer Society was announced. The votes were cast 184 in favour, and 1 against. The resolution was therefore passed. The Annual General Meeting that followed was held under the amended regulations which will be posted in Vector 23.4. In accordance with the resolution: 1) I shall write to BCS notifying them of the change and thanking them for their administrative help over the years. 2) Our Treasurer will open a new bank account for BAA and request repayment of our funds from BCS. You might be aware BCS claims ownership of our funds. I am pleased to say Richard Nabavi is assisting me in negotiating their return. Your committee has fair hopes of success; it also has plans for carrying on without them. While we would be glad to recover the money, our future does not depend on it. Please be assured BAA will continue to function as before, dedicated to furthering APL. Production of Vector will continue. In addition it was decided that our fee structure will remain unchanged for the year 2008-9 Vector 23.3 has been printed and will be posted in the next few days with this notice. We expect to distribute Vector 23.4 before the end of September. When we do, the Treasurer will ask for your subscription for the year beginning 1 May 2008. If you are happy to pay your subscription now, please simply send your cheque to the Treasurer. We expect to recommend further changes to our structure, roles, responsibilities and regulations but think it best to change, right now, only what we must. We thank you for your support during this change, and hope to continue to receive it. Your committee is confident this move will provide new opportunities, and will invigorate and free us to inject a new dynamism into the APL community. Further announcements will be made as we progress. Paul Grosvenor Chairman BAA |
