languages are not pens but pencils, for thinking your way through
problems. Simon Marsden shows how the class/instance structures in

Borror’s new tutorial for the q programming language. A gift from the
gods?

— Parallel thinking. The repeal of Moore’s Law has left manufacturers
unable to push processors any faster. So they push more of them into
machines. But pulling more speed out is hard work. Can array languages
help? David Liebtag introduces APL2’s parallel-processing operators.

— First experiences with Unicode in Dyalog 12. Adrian Smith tries
migrating Dyalog programs to Version 12 Unicode and winds up with less
than he started with. Less code, that is. But he’s not complaining…

— If you think J is complex try j. In his 50th J-ottings column Norman
Thomson finds a few simple diagrams clarify how J handles complex
numbers.
