Want to use computer as telephone

This is a discussion on Want to use computer as telephone within the basic.visual forums in Programming Languages category; I want to use my PC to make telephone calls, without using VOIP or the Internet. So for example, using VB (VB6 or .Net), I want to define the number to call, and using the mscomm component (or other, if more appropriate), use the audio card's speakers and mic to listen and talk. I have tried the VB6 DIALER.VBP, but it does some strange things, like leaving the line open even after the port is closed, and will not really make a connection. Does anyone have a more up-do-date example of how to do this? TIA!!...

You may want to look at the TAPI (telephony API) and its associated VB
control.

According to the documentation, TAPI is for Windows CE. I am working
on a Vista desktop (actually a laptop computer). The purpose is to
allow distributed data entry operators to call respondents without
having to fumble with dialing their phone while entering data at the
same time.

No, just the first reference you came across happened to be for WinCE.
The 6th result (for me) is the full Win32 TAPI reference.
