We do. And we write it, too.

Sometimes, we even compile it.

I don't. I always let the compiler do it. :-)

Young'un! Why, back in my day, we didn't have no fancy compilers to
deal with our code. Why no! We had to hand compile them ourselves!
And we didn't have no fancy "assemblers" neither! We had to figger
out those 1s and 0s for ourselves. Rassum fassum mumble grumble darned
kids today and their fancy toys....

Get off my lawn!

Speakin' of 1s and 0s... In my early times we had the symmetrical
ternary system to work with. Try it on for size, a number would be
written with 1s, 0s, and *negative 1s*. My favourite number is
_ _ _ _
1 1 1 1 0 (using 1 for minus one). What's yours? Of course we
weren't writing C++ at the time, no sir. Machine code, it was.

That nightmare is long gone! Now the compiler is doing all the work
for me. No more walking to school 20 kilometers in the snow uphill
barefoot.

Pah, 1s and 0s... back in the days, we used bare knifes to carve our
programs into memory.

Knives, eh? A stylo and a clay tablet - sophisticated, some might say
- that's what we used... And that's for output. At the time 1s and 0s
hadn't even been invented yet. Programs consisted of grunts and gestures
and were stored in *our own* long term memory. Damn, it was unstable.
Degrading rapidly. Store it without executing and within a year it would
deteriorate... And the internet was using hollowed logs (on which we
banged with clubs) and piles of grass over hot coals to make smoke...
