OK, folks, I've learned of this...

There's an opportunity in Indianapolis, IN, with several slots still
open, or so I'm told. The particulars are:

o IBM mainframe (specific OS version unknown, but presumed to be Z/OS)
o COBOL
o IDMS (other Codasyl DB work maybe will fit)
o ADSO
o JCL
o government/defense/financial application
o maintenance and support of system
o must be U.S. citizen
o overtime may be available
o rate in the neighborhood of $30/hr W-2, $36-$37/hr 1099 or corp-to-
corp
o minimum of one year, but almost certain to be three years, and has
potential to go much longer (some contractors have been there up to 9
years already)

I understand rate is moderate/low, but project is long term, and
Indianapolis is a moderate to low cost-of-living city. It might work
for some of you.

I know two, maybe three brokers, that I have experience with who are
working the client. I'll brief you on them, and you can make your own
inquiries and take your pick on who to represent you.

Those of you with "less than perfect fit" credentials still encouraged
to contact me. I think they'll still want to submit you.

It is my understanding that Princeton is _the very best_ of the Ivy
League. That is worth a lot.

On the other hand, it was only the other day, as I was driving back
home after a funeral visitation for a co-worker's wife, and taking a
route that I would not otherwise take, that I found myself on Indiana
State Road 9, and saw displayed in all its prominence, a highway sign
proudly proclaiming "Highway of the Vice Presidents".

Route 9 probably goes near Huntington (birthplace of Dan Quayle and
maybe the site of the Dan Quayle Museum, I kid you not), and maybe
also through the birthplaces of the other four Hoosiers who have been
Vice-President. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...ry_affiliation.

And as I type this, Sen. Evan Bayh is still in contention to be our
sixth VP. Go, Evan!

Notice that Indiana has had more Vice Presidents than any other state
save New York. So we are even Number 2 at being Number 2.

But, ahhhhh, that is the "sweet spot" for Hoosiers. We're not even
_trying_ to be Number 1. Number 2 is just right. It's the high blade
of grass that get cut after all, so les' jus' stay out-of-the-
limelight just a bit.

So instead of sending your kids to Princeton, try just down the road
from Indianapolis, at Indiana University, or Ball State. Just like
David Letterman. After all, he never has been as popular as Jay Leno,
just funnier.

It'll be cheaper than Princeton. And more fun.

In the interest of eternal striving for technical accuracy, let me
correct myself: Wikipedia states that Quayle was born in Indianapolis,
and only later graduated from Huntington High School.
However,Huntington indeed _is_ the host of the Dan Quayle Museum,
which according to Wikipedia, does feature info on _all_ of the VP's
and not just Quayle, further substantiating that indeed, Indiana does
understand its place under the Sun and in the Universe.

So all you second-raters out there, belly up to the bar and shoot me
that e-mail. :-)

Any chance one can telecommute? That would, at least for me, alleviate
the rather low rate.

It's doubtful for this project. U.S. citizenship is required, and
although I don't think a security clearance is required, a certain
amount of security/background vetting is done, and they probably want
you onsite.

What is possible though, is that a portion of the W-2 rate could be
paid as per diem expenses, relieving you of some tax burden. At least
one of the brokers is willing to do this. (If you're 1099 or corp-to-
corp, you're probably already aware of how to deduct expenses for
"necessary travel".) Consult your CPA or tax advisor for details.

I'll take that as indicating that I would not get such a letter.

Almost. In December 2007, Harvard announced zero tuition for students whose families make
less than $60K (by coincidence, $30/hr). Five of the other six Ivy League schools, plus
MIT, quickly followed suit. Princeton was the only holdout.

Princeton and Harvard weren't in the top 20 before the reduction. Here's a list of the
highest US tuitions:

Well, of course, that's exactly why I chose it, those many years ago... my
ability to Predict the Future! Just call me Your Most Psychic Majesty.

Now I'll have to find something; I'd better begin practising.

'How nice... you know, Columbia University considered me eligible for
financial aid when I took classes there after getting my BA; I'd really
like to think the intervening years have obviated the need for that.'

What is best? [in life is to crush your enemies and see them driven before
you...]

I once visited a client in Harvard Square. During a break, he suggested I
take a stroll.

When I returned, he asked how I liked the neighborhood. I said: "I'm willing
to admit you have more PhDs per square foot than I'm used to, more books in
your libraries, and larger endowments. But on the two things that really
matter, Texas has you beat."

"What's that?" he asked.

"Pretty women and football teams."

"I'd believe that," he admitted, "...and I've never been to Texas."

"Son," I opined, "you got women wandering around here that, if they were in
Texas, there'd be a bounty on 'em."

He hung his head and muttered: "Did you notice their socks don't match?..."
