Default CF7 stops spooling mail

Has anyone experienced problems with instances of CF7 that just stop sending
mail? The instances we're having problems with stop writing mail files to the
mail spool folder after long periods of uptime (several weeks.) The volumes of
mail involved are generated from a workflow system at a rate of around one mail
per minute for approx.18 hours per day, 6 days a week. We can find no reason
for the issue in any of the logs, and the only way to resolve the issue is to
restart the problematic instance. We're running CF7 in J2EE configuration.

Anyone have any CF7 tips, advice or workarounds (other than upgrade to CF8,
which isn't an option)? Thanks.
