The whole computer industry seemed to have more excitement back then. I don't
know if that's just advancing age talking, or if it is an accurate perception.
I just know that I was more excited about computers and programming back then,
though I still greatly enjoy it. Perhaps it was the thrill of new discovery.

Same here, still love what I do.

Remember when I got my Kaypro II. Commuted by ferry from San Franciso to
Larkspur. Trip home that night I formatted $4 per disk 5 1/4" floppies so
they would be ready when I got home.

Had to mail-order Ward Christianson's modem software before I could connect
    to CIS.

Connected using a 300 baud acoustic coupler modem that cost $350.

    Them was the days.

Hmm, the good ol' days when copying files meant just copying files
compared to these days where copying files means a flashy "glass-like"
window busy telling you how long it takes too calculate how long it
takes to draw a flashy "glass-like" dialog telling you how long it
    might take to copy it.

    Hi,

I think nostalgia is a good explanation - as we see that Borland itself
did not give the same value to their own brand as WE did... They built* a
mith, and discarded it. I really have now no reason to use my "Borland"
mugs, pens, mouse, T-shirts, jacket, mouse-pad, adhesive, notepads, watch
and other stuff I used to proudly show everywhere... The name on them is
    meanless now.

*They built it doing conferences, creating communities, buildings icons like
David I, making a culture around them, and we enjoyed it...

I also bought the Kaypro. Told my wife I bought a portable computer.
Nearly got a hernia carrying that thing around. We bought two of them
and wasted countless office hours with CrossTalk communicating between
the two machines, desparately trying to find a good reason to do so.

By the way, I had an Osborne too..

Yeah. You know, this newsgroup has been getting really crowded here
    lately.....

Ouch. Was that an acorn, or a piece of sky???

Yeah. I hated computers until I went to work for a little startup airplane
company that had 2 original IBM PCs as the "engineering mainframes", and one
of them actually had a 10 MB hard disk. I had a Fortran (pardon me,
FORTRAN) compiler on one 360 K floppy, and my source code on another, and
was pretty adept at swapping them out at the right times. And for the first
time, I actually enjoyed it. It was a hoot to get the next Byte or PC
Magazine to see what new development was going to double my productivity
overnight. Now it seems that all the excitement is about what bugs got
fixed, or didn't, in the latest Windows service pack.

But I sure do still love whipping up a new feature with Delphi when my
    customers ask for it. :^)

    Cheers,
    Van

Ah, that was the good ole days when CompuServe wasn't yet owned by crooks.
