How do I know if my D2007 is updated? (I don't want to start asking
questions about problems without knowing first it has been updated).

And where are the patches, should I need them?

to know what version of Delphi (and it's update) installed, open up Delphi
IDE, go to Help->About Delphi
there should be a dialog that tell you version of Delphi you have

yes you need them, update contain bug-fix in the final release,
optimization and improvement (sometimes even new features)
