Beware SmartEiffel

This is a discussion on Beware SmartEiffel within the Eiffel forums in Programming Languages category; I have no problem with proprietary software, but be clear in your license description, PLEASE! Don't claim to be GPL and then install trial-ware for non-commercial use only without telling the user much more than a cryptic compiler name. To top it off, I had to kill the installer from the process manager, because there was no other way to opt out of lcc-win32 - modal dialog with "OK" and no "Cancel" or ESC-handling. Lame... BTW, before installing the windows version, I tried compiling the cygwin version. This failed with the last line in the log reading ../make_release.sh: line 454: ...

Default Beware SmartEiffel

more than a cryptic compiler name.

To top it off, I had to kill the installer from the process manager,

BTW, before installing the windows version, I tried compiling the
cygwin version. This failed with
the last line in the log reading

../make_release.sh: line 454: ./new_libs: No such file or directory

And I thought Eiffel was a correctness-oriented language used by
correctness-oriented programmers.

Disappointing, then misleading, then lame.

More about this:

The very first window does mention that lcc-win32 will be installed,
but this notice is kind of obscured in a lot of other text (that I
assumed was some standard GPL disclaimers), and LCC is actually
referred to as "free" - no mention of "non-commercial only".

And in case nobody noticed: ISE Eiffel needs some C Compiler!

Sorry I do not get this message, does SmartEiffel install lcc-win32?

I doubt that very much.

You are lame, not lcc-win

lcc-win has been used by the SmallEiffel (then SmartEiffel) team since
years. Everybody likes it because of its compilation speed. If you do
not like it because obscure ideological reasons then

JUST DO NOT USE IT!

To remove lcc from your system go to the directory that
contains the lcc directory (maybe c:\) and type
rmdir lcc /S
and be done with it.
