Plonk the clueless new user, not least of all because I want to
guard against people who don't regard the necessity of using test
groups (alt.test, etc.) for their test posts as a good thing.

I haven't posted "test" mesages for a loooong time, BUT:
It has happened to me that a test message on a test group worked
great, but a message (including a "test" message) on one of my
"working" groups did not come through.
Don't know why that happened, but let's not be too quick to condemn.
We're not all perfect, you know . . . .

Actually, it was the "Please Disreguard {sic}" that inspired the
cannibalism, not the misplaced test. In the event, Comp300 has
not been plonked. I am, however, likely to disregard any future
posts by Comp300, on the theory that if he/she is careless about
his/her spelling, how much can I trust anything he/she says about
Eudora?

Spelling!

Oh well, our university has a large and successful Computer Science
graduate program, with students from China, Middle East, Africa, ...

Although they are all required to speak English fairly fluently,
some of them don't spell everything equally as fluently;
nonetheless, they are getting snatched up by companies
the likes of Microsoft, Google, Bank of America, AT&T, Wal-Mart, ...
http://mum.edu/compro/companies.html

I can probably outspell most of them,
while most of them will probably out-earn me

"My uncle down in Texas
cain't even write his name;
he signs his checks with X's
but they cash 'em, just the same."

[a verse of "Doin' What Comes Natur'lly,"
from Irving Berlin's "Annie Get your Gun"]
