Two problems: changing dominant personality; information about an addressee name
I'm using Eudora 7.1 in "paid mode" (i.e. it thinks it's in paid mode
although there is no longer anyone to pay).
First: how can I change the personality that is treated as the
dominant personality? I've looked at the help text, and I can't find a
thing about it.
Second: when I'm composing an outgoing email, how can I tell what
address Eudora will send the email to when I enter a name?
Here's an example of the second issue. I want to send an email to Joe
Schlebotnik. I start to enter the name in the "To" field. Eudora
displays the full name, I select it, and Eudora enters it in "To."
When I finish the message I send it, and it comes back to me marked
"undeliverable -- invalid address." I check the address book and find
the address there is correct, but the address Eudora sent the email to
turns out to be completely different. Why? How can I correct the
problem, and how could I have known it would happen without sending
the message and having it misdelivered and (hopefully) returned?

The Dominant Setting is handled under Tools Options
All others are under Personalities

Look at the setting under Miscellaneous. Automatically expand nicknames.

You may have a "munged" address that was saved Visit the "auto completion"
section of Tools Options and un-tick the "Add From lines of replied to
messages, the check all address books (not just the default one) for the bogus
entries.

I looked there before posting and didn't find it. I just looked
again, and I still can't find it in any of the categories that look
possibly relevant. Could you be more specific, please?

Thank you; works like a charm.

It is not called Dominant there.
Getting Started
Sending
Receiving
All these make up that you know in Personalities as DOMINANT.

I looked at those before, and again now, and I don't see what any of
them would do for me.
I wonder if you misunderstood my question. I am not asking how to
change the properties of the Dominant personality; I am asking how to
change the personality that is designated as Dominant.
Specifically: I am shifting my email addresses to a new domain name.
Several weeks ago I defined the new addresses and created new
personalities for them in Eudora. Then I began notifying my
correspondents of the change. Now it is time to make one of the
personalities in the new domain the Dominant personality, in place of
the corresponding personality in the old domain. That is what I'm
asking how to do. The last step, after I cease getting a significant
amount of email addressed to the old domain, will be to shut down the
old domain.

"Dominant" means the unnamed personality defined
within the main "[Settings]" section of Eudora.ini
(all other personalities have separate, named sections,
although the "Personalities" window treats all alike).
If you mean to swap the definitions of the personalities,
this could be done only via editing Eudora.ini offline.
What is the expected gain from doing this?
Without having experimented to find out for sure,
I would wonder whether it might possibly confuse
the association of previously stored mail with particular personalities.

If you mean when using Address Book entry names,
the "Expand Nicknames" option will replace nicknames
by the actual name (or entire list, if any, so be forewarned
in case you have any list of hundreds of people under one nickname).

You can't change the personality designated as Dominant within Eudora.
You will need to create a new personality that has all the same
properties as your current dominant personality and use this in place
of your "old" dominant personality for as long as you need it. Then
you will need to change the properties of the dominant personality to
make it your "new" dominant personaility.

Eudora doesn't "designate which personality is labeled Dominant,"
but rather treats the basic settings info as an unnamed personality,
labeled "Dominant" instead of having an actual name.

Nothing need be done. At most, if you don't want to contact its POP server
for downloading any more mail, just un-check the "Check Mail"
option box in the "Properties" of "Dominant," via the "Personalities" window
(this setting is not available in the main settings interface).
You can choose a permanent default outgoing name and email address
by using a default stationery (each personality, including the un-named
"Dominant," can have its own default stationery).

In addition to what the others said.
"swapping" another personality with the dominant is tedious, but doable.
You can also just use filters to make the reply personality xx (an outgoing
filter) based upon header or address book that was used.
Be advised that this can be quirky at times, Watch the personality chosen in
the composition window. You can also just set the personality used within the
composition window, you just need to remember to do it <G>, filters help.

That's what I was trying to avoid; it reuires much more work, and more
important, it introduces far more opportunities for error. If that's
what I have to do, though, I'll do it.
